Meatball dinner is March 16

When Fargo was hit with a major flood last year, Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary members rushed over there to help.

Some missed the club's annual youth programs fundraiser -- the meatball dinner.

Money was raised, but this year's turnout shows more promise, members say.

Public relations officer Kathy Michaelson said the club hopes to raise around $3,000, which will be put toward services provided to area youth programs.

The Boys and Girls Club along with Frazee and Detroit Lakes athletic programs are among those who will benefit from the annual fundraiser.

The event is planned for Tuesday, March 16 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes.

Rotarians are expecting to serve between 700 and 800 at the meatball dinner Tuesday.

In addition to supporting area youth organizations, the club often donates to student special event transportation costs and Dollars for Scholars.

Michaelson has been a Breakfast Rotary member for more than 15 years and since she joined, the club has grown from about 30 members to now more than 70.

"We're on the move," she said. "It's a great organization and I can say that you get more out of it than you put in."

Upcoming fundraisers the club has planned include Radio Days -- to be held in May -- where members will be featured on local radio to speak about Rotary service projects in the area. The club also plans to have a peach sale in August.
