Celebrating Christmas: Area churches host events to enjoy the season

There are plenty of ways to celebrate Christmas in the lakes area -- from dinners and carols to musicals and talent shows.

First Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes is having a Christmas dinner with the goal of making sure nobody is left alone on Christmas.

The 11th annual "Christmas at Our House" dinner will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 25, at the church.

But if Detroit Lakes residents are unable to attend, they can place orders before noon Thursday, Dec. 23, and have the meals delivered to their doors.

Meals will be delivered to those who live within the city limits. To reserve a meal, contact the church office at 844-2808 and leave your name, address, phone number and the number of meals needed. There is no charge for the meals.

Other events planned for Christmas include "Candles and Carols" at Trinity Lutheran Church, slated for Sunday, Dec. 19, at 4:30 p.m.

Attendees will hear Christmas stories, sing carols and enjoy a turkey dinner served buffet style. The cost of the meal is $8 for adults, $6 for children 12 and under. All money, over the cost of the food, is donated to Lakes Area Crisis & Resource Center and the Becker County Food Pantry.

Also on Sunday, Dec. 19, the Christian Fellowship Church will host their fourth annual Christmas Variety Show at 7 p.m.

The talent show will be performed by area children who will dazzle members of the church and the public. Everyone is invited for refreshments and Christmas goodies after the show.

Grace Community Church of Osage will host a night of Christmas Carols Sunday, Dec. 19, starting at 5 p.m.

Church members will furnish soup and cookies as they listen to Virginia Schwalm play the piano and sing the season's favorites.

Pastor Paul McKibben calls it a "soup and sing" event where the small congregation gets together to celebrate the holidays.

"It's for people that enjoy the songs of the season, and it's low key and just a great time to visit and share a little soup," he said.

Lake Park Lutheran Church will also present the musical drama "God Speaking" at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, in the church and at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, in the Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes.
