All-City Choir Festival set this weekend in DL

BRET AMUNDSON will be the clinician and guest conductor for the 38th Annual Detroit Lakes All-City Choir Festival, set for this Friday and Saturday.

The 38th Annual Detroit Lakes All-City Choir Festival will be held this Friday and Saturday, March 30-31.

Over 500 Detroit Lakes choir students in grades 6 -12 will be participating in the event.

Bret Amundson of the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minn., will be the clinician and guest conductor of this year's festival.

Amundson is in his second year as the director of choral activities at the College of St. Scholastica. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education and vocal performance from St. John's University, and a Masters of Music in choral conducting from St. Cloud State University. He recently finished his Doctorate of Music in choral conducting at the University of Washington.

At the College of St. Scholastica, Amundson directs the Concert Choir, Bella Voce, Women's Choir, and Vocal Jazz Choir, teaches courses in music education and conducting, and teaches in the school's Dignitas program. Amundson is also the director for the Lake Superior Youth Chorus Concert Choir.

Amundson currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Choral Director's Association of Minnesota, where he is the editor of its Star of the North publication. He also sits on the Board of Directors for the St. John's Boys Choir.

As a singer, Amundson has sung with the Tin Ports Choral Project, the University of Washington Chamber Singers and the Twin-Cities based choral ensemble, Kantorei. He is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association, the Minnesota Music Educator's Association, the College Music Society, Chorus America, and the VoiceCare Network.

At the All-City Grand Finale Concert on Saturday, March 31, Amundson will direct one selection with each participating choir in addition to three mass choir selections featuring all choir students in grades 6-12.

The Grand Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ralph Anderson Gymnasium at Detroit Lakes High School.

The public is cordially invited to attend the concert. Choir members are selling advance tickets and tickets will also be available at the door.

Admission prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students in grades 6-12. Children in grades 5 and under will be admitted free of charge.
