Holiday happenings ’round the lakes

The Boys & Girls Club in Detroit Lakes hosted the first-ever Easter Eggstravaganza last year, bringing in hundreds of youngsters from around the area. This year’s event will be held at Lakes Area Vineyard Church on Saturday, March 16. Washington Square Mall will also host an Easter Egg Hunt March 23. Submitted Photo

Snow may be on the ground, but spring is in the air. Easter events are right around the corner, including a couple of big ones that are free and open to the public.

Easter Eggstravaganza

This event is happening Saturday, March 16, in the Lakes Area Vineyard Church in Detroit Lakes.

For the second year, volunteers from Vineyard are holding the event that last year brought in around 500 people to the Boys and Girls Club. This year, however, the Eggstravaganza is being held at the Vineyard Church to give the popular event some more space.

“We had tons of fun last year because there was no snow so we were able to do a lot of it outside at the Boys and Girls Club,” said event coordinator Adam Neuerburg, “but it looks like we’re going to have to be inside this year and we have a little bit bigger space at the church.”

And they will likely need it, as 75 to 100 volunteers with the church will be hiding 3,000 candy-filled Easter eggs.

“We’ll have tons of candy, fun crafts, carnival games, snacks, coffee, hot chocolate, lemonade and inflatable games from Games to Go,” said Neuerburg, who says that includes a 50-foot long inflatable obstacle course, a big bounce house and a bounce and slide house.

The Easter Eggstravaganza is a free event, and when Neuerburg says “free,” he means it.

“There are no strings attached; we do not take donations,” he said. “This is something that the church pays for because we want to provide something to families that is a fun, free thing to do in this hard economy. We want it to be a blessing to the community.”

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the event kicking off at 9 and going until 11:30. Neuerburg says kids should dress warm for the weather just in case the egg hunt can be held outside.

Lakes Area Vineyard Church is located behind the airport at 950 Longview Drive in Detroit lakes. For more information on the event, call 846-1199.

Easter Egg Hunt in the mall

The Detroit Lakes Women of Today will also be rolling out the eggs at the Washington Square Mall on Saturday, March 23. This event is being set up in the vacant retail spot across from the movie theater.

“The mall is going to have it all decorated for us, and they do a great job,” said Robin Smith, a Detroit Lakes Woman of Today member and event coordinator.

Smith says the egg hunt is geared towards the youngest bunny-lovers, beginning at 10 a.m.

“We break them up into mini-hunts for the different age categories, that way they don’t trample on each other,” said Smith, who says each hunt goes for around 15 minutes before the space is re-stocked with eggs and another age group jumps in.

The hunt begins with ages 2 and under, then 3-4 year olds, onto 5-6 year olds and finally 7-8 year old hungers.

“So it’s really important for people to be on time, otherwise we’ll get kids showing up after their age category has already gone, and then they’re in there getting stepped on by older kids,” said Smith.

While the Detroit Lakes Women of Today will be on hand to run the event, Smith says they couldn’t have done it alone. Several mall vendors pitched in to help ensure those eggs and jammed packed with the good stuff (candy), while students from the special education department of the high school rolled up their sleeves for stuffing duty.

“We’re really appreciative of that too, because there are 2,000 eggs,” said Smith, who says the Easter Bunny will also be hopping in for the party.

“And he got a facelift this year,” she said, laughing. “He was a little scary looking before, but the mall got a new costume and this one is just precious. So parents can bring cameras and take pictures.”

The event is free and open to the public; for more information, log onto the Detroit Lakes Women of Today website at or find them on Facebook at DL Women of Today.
