Kiwanis members may be known for their various efforts to raise money for children’s programming, but this time they’ve simply gone hog wild with their ideas.

The first ever Kiwanis Hog Wild fundraiser is coming up Friday, June 7, at Meadows on the Lind.

The event will feature a fun, backyard-style barbeque theme centered around the porky little animal so many have grown to love — the pig.

A big part of capturing this theme lays with the caterer…Lush Lola’s.

“Lush Lola’s is all about the pig and the pig roast, and Lush Lola is actually a pink pig that they use as their icon or mascot,” said Beth Pridday, who is co-chairing the event with Carrie Johnston.

“And they will actually be roasting a whole pig there at the event, which I think around here is kind of a novelty for most people,” added Pridday.

Tickets for the event are $40, and that includes a full meal of BBQ pork, mashed potatoes, salad, veggies and a dessert bar.

Bleachers will be providing a cash bar, while Rockstar DJ will be on hand for a little music while party-goers are pigging out.

“There will be games, mechanical pig racing, a bean bag toss with little tiny pig bean bags, a pig piñata, a couple of yard games like the traditional beer ring toss and our red solo cup game where we’ve got three large solo cups that will be used for people to try their skills at tossing things in,” said Pridday, who says tickets for the games can be purchased, and then tossed in little piggy banks for random prize drawings.

“So you don’t have to be all that skilled, you just have to be willing to pay to play,” said Pridday.

Kiwanis members are also busy collecting a variety of chair baskets that will be silent auctioned off in what they call “Chairs for Charity.”

“We’ve got everything from an Adirondack chair to a potting bench chair to a little Adirondack charm bracelet from Prices,” said Johnston.

“We also have a little pink child’s chair that comes with kid-like items,” added Pridday. “We have a really cute potty chair being donated and it’ll have some treats and children’s’ books about pigs, as well as a couple of chairs from WeFest with some WeFest items.”

The money raised from Chairs for Charity, the games and the ticket sales all go to the local Kiwanis Club.

“And we support everything from scholarships to sending kids to Camp Cormorant to maybe a teacher’s request for something for the classroom…” said Johnston, who says the club is also selling bottles of Lush Lola’s BBQ sauce for $10 a bottle with proceeds also going to Kiwanis.

Meadows on the Lind is an outdoor venue located six miles south of Detroit Lakes on the south shore of Lind Lake, but come rain or shine, the party will go on.

“Even if it rains, they have an outdoor shelter there with walls and heat and everything, so if it rains we’ll just take everything under the shelter,” said Pridday, who stresses that this is not just an event for Kiwanis members, it’s open to everyone.

“This is a fun, summer, hog wild party, so if you’re looking for something fun to do on Friday June 7, we’re your people,” said Pridday, who says they would like attendees to buy their tickets by Tuesday, June 4.
