Legendary Haggard comes to Mahnomen
Country music legend Merle Haggard will perform live on stage at Shooting Star Casino, Hotel & Event Center in Mahnomen on Friday, July 26, at 8 p.m.
Tickets are sold out.
A huge influence in the country music genre, Haggard has released 70 albums, 600 songs — 250 of which he has written himself — and 40 No. 1 hits, including, “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive,” “Branded Man,” “Mama Tried,” and “Workin’ Man Blues.”
Haggard’s signature song, “Okie from Muskogee,” also a No. 1, became an anthem for Middle Americans whose patriotism and traditional values were under attack in 1969.
The song earned him two Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards for Single of the Year and Album of the Year.
The following year, he was named Entertainer of the Year from both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and the Country Music Association (CMA).
Haggard has also won three Grammy Awards throughout his career, including Best Country Vocal Performance for “That’s the Way Love Goes” in 1984, Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 1998 and the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999 for “Mama Tried.”
Haggard was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.
He was also the recipient of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2006, as well as the prestigious award for Lifetime Achievement and Outstanding Contribution to American Culture from the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in December 2010, where he was honored with a tribute gala featuring musical performances from country greats, such as Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert and Brad Paisley.
On June 14 of this year Haggard received an honorary doctorate from California State University, Bakersfield, in recognition of his significant contributions to the Bakersfield Sound, a genre of country music that was developed in the area in the late 1950s.
