Choir concert is April 4 in Detroit Lakes

The 35th Annual Detroit Lakes All-City Choir Festival will be held Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4, 2009.

Over 600 Detroit Lakes choir students in grades 5-12 will be participating in this event.

Dr. David Dickau, a nationally-known choral conductor that has appeared throughout the country as a clinician, will be the guest conductor and clinician for the two-day event.

Since 1991, Dr. Dickau has served as Director of Choral Activities at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he conducts the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers and teaches conducting and composition. He has led the MSU Concert Choir on several regional and international concert tours.

He recently received the Distinguished Faculty Scholar award from his university. Dr. Dickau holds advanced degrees in choral music from Northwestern University (Evanston, Ill.) and the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, Calif.).

He has taught choral music on both high school and college levels and has conducted community and church choirs. He served for thirteen years as music director of Magnum Chorum, a Twin Cities-based chamber choir. Under his direction, this ensemble has appeared in regional and national ACDA conventions and has been featured on National Public Radio in the nationally syndicated program The First Art.

Dr. Dickau has been an active member of the American Choral Director's Association (ACDA), serving as a national Repertoire and Standards Chair from 1987 to 1991. He has appeared as a clinician at ACDA national and regional conventions and has conducted several regional festivals. He also served a term as President of ACDA of Minnesota.

Dr. Dickau has performed at four national ACDA conventions. His choirs have performed at regional conventions in Omaha and Minneapolis and at a national convention at Orchestra Hall in Chicago.

Dr. Dickau composes numerous commissioned pieces each year. His compositions appear in a number of catalogues and are widely performed throughout the United States. He has filled commissions for choral festivals, colleges and universities, community choirs, churches, and schools. Significant commissions have included

"Dresden Canticles," which premiered in Leipzig, Dresden, and Prague in 1998 -- composed in honor of the rebuilding of the Frauenkirche in Dresden, Germany -- and "View from the Air," commissioned by the Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation in honor of the seventieth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's historic trans-Atlantic flight.

The 2009 All-City Choir Grand Finale Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, in the Ralph Anderson Gymnasium at the Detroit Lakes High School. The concert will first feature two choral selections by each participating choir followed by three mass choir selections performed by all choir members in grades 5-12, under the direction of Dr. Dickau.

The public is cordially invited to attend the concert. Advance tickets are available from participating DL choir students in grades 6 - 12. Tickets will also be available at the door the evening of the concert. The cost of tickets is $5 for adults and $3 for students in grades 5-12. Children in grades 4 and below are free.
