'These Songs of Freedom' in Bemidji Oct. 20
"These Songs of Freedom" are an exploration of the search for freedom that continues to haunt us in the modern age... and a collaboration of musicians bringing an evening of original music to Bemidji. (It also features Pete McDonnell on drums and Craig Haugen on sax.) The show will be Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Thompson Recital Hall, Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.
No matter your cup of popular musical tea, the music that wiggles your hips and makes you throw a hopeful fist into the air traces its origins back to the spiritual, the first music born from this perpetually tortured American soil. Our popular musical heritage was wrought from the agony of a people informed by African rhythm and Protestant hymns.
The transcendent and transformative power of this music's descendants continually speaks to the deep human yearning for freedom, whether it leaves the lips of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, or your favorite local singer at your favorite local bar.
