Joanne S. Paul, 76, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, December 18, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, December 21 at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Ogema.

Joanne Susan Bartsch, known as Sue, was born to Walter and Ethel (Phillips) Bartsch on May 8, 1933 in St. Paul. She was raised in the family home at 932 Cherokee Ave. in St. Paul, and was a 1951 graduate of Humboldt High School in St. Paul.

Following graduation, Sue worked for the First National Bank in downtown St. Paul. She was united in marriage to Raymond S. Paul on April 19, 1952 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in West St. Paul. The couple lived in the metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St. Paul and, based on Ray’s employment, in Michigan, Colorado and Carlton, Minn., prior to moving to Ogema in 1965. They owned and operated Sue’s Corner, a bar and café for several years.

Prior to her retirement, Sue also worked for the Detroit State Bank in Detroit Lakes and the Ogema State Bank in Ogema. Ray died in 1993, and Sue continued to live in Ogema until moving to Diamond Willow in Detroit Lakes in August 2007.

Sue enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting, fishing, baking (especially home made bread and raviolis), and traveling, which included a driving trip to Alaska with Ray.

Surviving Sue are a daughter, Kathy (Mike) Kraker of Mahnomen; two sons, Rick (Sharon) Paul of Cloquet, Minn., and Jeffrey Paul of New Prague, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Heidi) Kraker, Scott (Sarah) Paul, Jennifer (Richard) Harris, Joseph (Amanda) Paul, Emily (Daniel) Pierce, Jeffrey Paul Jr. and Aaron Paul.

The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is serving the family. Memories of Sue may be shared online at daviddonehower.com.
