Community gearing up for Polar Fest
Most events have someone who takes ownership and organizes the entire event, with some delegation of work, of course. The organizing group — like the Jaycees, Chamber, Rotary or Kiwanis — has a home base and the public can identify with who the leading group is. Not so with Polar Fest.

Thanks to those that made Polar Fest a success
I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to all those that made this year’s Polar Fest another success. With events ranging from the return of the Breakfast Rotary’s Poles ‘N Holes Fishing Derby on Little Detroit Lake to Polar Explorer Will Steger at the Historic Holmes Theater, vintage snowmobile racing, golfing, motorcycle stunt exhibitions, boot hockey, youth fishing derby and ice harvesting demonstration, the 5K Freeze Your Buns Run, topped off by spectacular fireworks at the city beach and Polaritaville Dance, it was fantastic!

Correction
In the Feb. 12 issue of the Becker County Record, the story on Legacy Funds incorrectly stated that Legacy Funds were used to bring explorer Will Steger to speak during Polar Fest. The Steger event was actually funded by the Becker County Friends of the Library, with assistance from Lakeshirts, the Lodge on the Lake and Seaberg Power Sports.

The legend of ‘Peter the Polar Bear’
A couple of years ago, the Detroit Lakes Library hosted a short story contest in conjunction with the 2010 Polar Fest celebration. Aspiring writers were asked to submit stories of 1,000 words or less, telling the story of “The Legend of Polar Pete,” the mascot of Detroit Lakes’ annual winter celebration.

Get ready to polar plunge
It’s a good thing when an organization outgrows its home, which is the case for the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes’ Polar Fest Plunge. Housed at Lakeside Tavern for the last several years, headquarters for the event is now being moved down the street to the Pavilion. It is the second weekend of the Polar Fest activities, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18.

Cold, clear cubes: A look back at local ice harvesting
About 50-60 years ago, ice harvesting was the second largest industry in Becker County. Second only to timber and logging, ice harvesting has now become a novelty with many stories now just a memory. Last week’s Brown Bag Lunch series at the Becker County Historical Society featured ice harvesting, and the historical society is also sponsoring an ice cutting demonstration on Saturday as the ice is cut for the Polar Fest Plunge.

Grand Marais adventurer Lonnie Dupre made it on to Alaska’s Mount McKinley on Thursday. After waiting out some weather, Dupre flew 60 miles from Talkeetna, Alaska, to an elevation of 7,200 feet at a base camp on North America’s highest mountain. It’s where he’ll begin his second bid to become the first solo climber to reach the summit of McKinley in January.
