Pacifiers, wheelbarrows and fish hooks
The other day in church I looked over at a baby boy who was as happy and well behaved as any little boy in church can possibly be. What was the secret? There was no secret — the answer was obvious.By Lynn Hummel , November 18, 2009
Records were made to be broken
As you watch the World Series, you will note that a graphic on the screen gives you the speed of every pitch. When the strong pitchers are really humming the ball, they get up to 95 mph.By Lynn Hummel , November 11, 2009
Got the losing my hormones blues
The blues are all about tough breaks, bad luck, misfortune, disappointment and whining, usually the result of someone else doing you wrong. You know the usual themes: your sweetheart took your hunting dog and ran away, rancid grits, your rusty pickup has a flat tire, getting’ ugly, hard work, mean boss and feeling lonely.

An afternoon walk in the park
What do you do if you’ve gone to Fargo on a Sunday afternoon to visit your family and suddenly everybody has taken off on personal missions and you’re home alone? You take off for the nearest park and go for a walk. After all it was the first warm, dry, sunny day in what seemed to be a month.

The search for perfection
Albert Einstein developed the theory of relativity (E=mc²) when he was only 26 years old.

The half-marathon solution
The year was 499 B.C. To make a long story short, the Persians were determined to punish the Greeks for coming to the aid of the Greek city of Ionia, which revolted against the control of Persia.

A lady named Faith
The moral of this story is that a hunch is vastly superior to a computer match, an arranged marriage or marrying for money. Sam Toperoff and Faith Potter are proof.

Hummel column: They do more than just fight fires
I first met Tony when he was best man at the wedding of his brother (my son-in-law). Later, I got better acquainted when Tony was the chief muscle man and workhorse in helping his brother move. The man had the strength of a bull and just a bit of impatience when the rest of us weren’t moving along at his pace.

Five signs that the world is going nuts
Over the Labor Day weekend, five situations came to my attention that suggest to me that the world is going nuts. I’m an optimist, but this list of five is most discouraging.

Good to the last drop
This morning I squeezed what could have been the very last bit of toothpaste out of the tube. That was after I applied my “ringer routine” of flattening the tube to the thickness of a sheet of paper.

Dust to dust
The boys had just returned from a round of golf and were sitting around their regular table at the place where they stop for their usual after-golf beverages, coffee and Coca-Cola. They were dusting off their second pot of coffee and third pitcher of coke. It was happy hour, and the golfers were having a good time. Each one was a comedian.

Next time may be the last time
I said goodbye to an 88-year-old friend last week who was leaving for Colorado, not to return until next summer. His health was in serious decline.

Cash for Clunker lawnmowers
My friend Cliff Cutblade is the ultimate entrepreneur. Cliff happens to be in the lawn mower and tractor business, but when the Cash For Clunkers car discount program was announced recently, Cliff’s wheels started turning. His first thought was, “Why aren’t I in the new car business?” But he didn’t waste much time with that thought. His second thought was, “How can I make this work for me?”

The chocolate milk summitThe chocolate milk summit
I took these three kids fishing, we’ll call them Mauer, Morneau and Kubel. Mauer was eight, his cousin Morneau was 10 and Kubel, Morneau’s friend was 10. We were on a pontoon, with plenty of room to walk around. One fished off the side and two straight off the back. We were trolling, getting snagged, catching weeds and not many fish.

Waiting for the light to turn green
Some stop signs have been added at a few intersections in town lately and it’s a good thing.
