Courage is a test of physical, moral challenges
On Dec. 31, the Utah Highway Patrol reported that a 46-year-old driver with two nine-year-old girls and a four-year-old boy in his car, slipped off an icy road, rolled down an embankment and landed upside down in the frigid Logan River.February 01, 2012
Singin’ the Broke Tooth Blues
If you’re a fan of the blues, you probably know that they now have little mainstream appeal. Observers say the blues are now passé, past their prime, out of date. How can that be? Are pain, betrayal, broken hearts and discouragement out of date?By Lynn Hummel , January 25, 2012
In art, it can take chutzpah
“Hey mom, look at me!”
Any time you are near a playground, a swimming pool or a beach, you hear the little kids shouting to their moms and pleading for attention. In political campaigns, the effort may be more grown up, but no more subtle: “I had real experience working with Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher... I worked with Reagan in the early 80s developing strategy for the Soviet Empire.”

Bless the hands that came before mine
I was helping my daughter, Goldilocks, with a hammer and nail project a few weeks ago and days later I noticed that I had a black fingernail on the middle finger of my left hand. Although I didn’t remember putting a hammer to that nail, there is no other explanation.

2011-12 reflections and predictions
Can you believe it — 2011 is almost over already. Time does fly — the paint just dried on 2010. So now it’s time to reflect on the events of the past year and fearlessly forecast what we can look for in 2012.

‘Merry Christmas’ I shouted
“Merry Christmas!” I shouted to a woman on the street.
But she didn’t hear me.
Her misty eyes stared halfway round the globe
Where her son was lost in Afghanistan
And never found his way home.

Burning the midnight oil
As I was heading for an 8 o’clock appointment for my car this morning, I was hoping the mechanics would be guys who do their best work first thing in the morning. After all, we know there are “morning people” and there are “night owls.” I didn’t want some night owl who had been watching tv until 2 a.m. or out on the town last night working on my car. After all, it’s a 2006 model — practically new.

A salute to mashed potatoes
How was your Thanksgiving dinner? They’re almost always wonderful, aren’t they? But before you talk about the traditional turkey and dressing, let me address a more basic issue — mashed potatoes.

The working man blues
The last straw for me was when I read this morning that one of the popular presidential candidates announced that our child labor laws are “truly stupid” and that what we ought to do is fire school janitors (all except one master janitor) and hire the students to clean schools instead.

Sorry, you have the wrong number
I picked up the ringing phone. “Hello — good morning.”
“Kitchen please.”
“Sorry, you have the wrong number.”
That was the end of the conversation. But it didn’t have to end that way. That wrong number could have been the beginning of a new friendship.

Not everything can be awesome
When I was a teen-ager, the best things ever got was “darn good.” That expression was reserved for the very limited and the very special. But the expressions kept changing and the best things ever came to be described as great, wonderful, terrific, fabulous, marvelous, fantastic, unbelievable, incredible, and finally, awesome.

Tell it to me in a letter
I just read (in a magazine that arrived three weeks ago — don’t throw ‘em until you’ve read ‘em) that the U.S. Postal Service reports that the average box holder receives a personal letter only once every seven weeks. Is that terrible or is it just another sign of the changing times?

I can’t get this package open
I bought a ham salad sandwich just this noon that was wrapped in a cellophane package. The cellophane was folded so that the price label sealed the whole package. I pulled on the wrapper to unwrap it. Couldn’t get it open. I tried to gnaw the tiniest beginning to rip the package open. Teeth too dull.

A one-of-a-kind hockey stick
How much is a hockey stick worth? If you’re an NHL hockey player scoring a goal or two every game with an occasional hat trick (three goals in one game), you’re earning millions and you would consider your hockey stick to be priceless.

Bud Light — the pick of the litter
I hereby crown Bud Light the Pick of the Litter. Bud Light is the little brother of Bud, the King of Beers. I was on a litter pick-up crew last week (community service, but not court-ordered) and as I slogged through the ditches filling my garbage bags full of throw-out-the-car-window trash, I realized how popular Bud Light is.
