A dummy at your wedding
Don’t tell me I’m the only guy who ever had to go to a wedding he wanted very much to avoid. You know, some beautiful Saturday afternoon in the summer when the fresh air and warm sunshine were calling you for golf, fishing or some other relaxation. But there is some bride or groom your kids know but you don’t and you, as the parents of your kids, get invited to this near-stranger’s wedding.By Lynn Hummel , September 01, 2010
The duke’s mixture in America
Tonight I put another can full of vegetable scraps into my compost pit. What I have in that pit is grass clippings, seaweed, flower petals, celery chunks (I try to double my celery every year), rhubarb ends, corn silk, corn husks, rotten tomatoes, strawberry shavings, rotten blueberries, potato peelings, egg shells, leftover potting soil, dirt from under my fingernails, coffee grounds, flower stems, chopped up banana peels, orange peels, apple peels, pieces of watermelon rind, cantaloupe mush, onion snips and skins, fallen leaves, rainwater, teardrops, sunshine and wind.August 25, 2010
In Haiti there are small pockets of hope
“Why would anybody want to go to Haiti?” I was asked, “It’s hopeless there.” Well, we went anyway, a team of six, because of an assignment that had to be taken care of. Once the airline ticket was paid for the Rubicon had been crossed. No turning back. But, I must confess, the first impression upon arrival was “this looks hopeless.”

Smelling, or not smelling the roses
Until I heard part of an interview last week, I had given no thought to the everyday delights that come wafting into my nose. The person being interviewed had lost her sense of smell for some time and had written a book on the subject. In making a dash from home to the hardware store in my car, I caught only a small segment of the fascinating interview and didn’t get the lady’s name or the name of her book.

Follow your doctor’s orders
My friend Tom gets his medical treatment in England, where he lives. Tom’s doctor realized that some of Tom’s symptoms were being made worse by anxiety, so he asked him leading questions so that he could structure his treatment.

Generosity and the $12,725 watch
I saw an ad for a $12,725 men’s Swiss watch the other day. It was a beautiful piece of jewelry with a circle of 36 small diamonds around its bold, handsome face. It had all the fine details a watch could possibly have and, oh yes, it keeps accurate time.

Retirement is simply a change of venue
In the law, the venue of a case is usually the place where an incident or crime occurred, and, therefore, that’s the county or district where the trial will be held. But in some cases, because of pre-trial publicity or some other circumstance that would prejudice a fair trial, there is a change of venue and the trial is moved to a more neutral location.

Birds of a feather flock together
“Birds of a feather flock together,” my mother always used to say. She had several different meanings for that expression, but there was always one underlying message: Don’t forget where you came from. And the best way not to forget where you came from is to go back there once in a while to touch base — home base.

It’s all just a matter of judgement
As this article is being written, hearings began today in the Senate Judiciary Committee on the confirmation of Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Anonymous Letters, Inc. for all your letter needs
Have you ever wanted to write an anonymous letter? Of course you have. The world is filled with folks who have wanted to write anonymous letters. But not many were ever written. Why not? Because we’re cowards.

Read this ramble — once over lightly
For the past couple of weeks, whenever you picked up a Sunday paper or a news or family magazine you would find a list for “light summer reading.” The expression conjures up the image of a very casual reader in a hammock with a cold drink (lemonade or iced tea) at his or her side, reading a paperback of little or no practical or literary value. The unspoken message is, “It’s summer — don’t tax your brain.”

Give a man a horse he can ride
Has a word or a line of a song suddenly popped into your consciousness after laying hidden away in the dark recesses of your subconscious and forgotten for years or decades? Yes it happens. When I was in high school in the 50’s our high school band and choir went to a one day county music festival every year. We competed against the bands and choirs from the rest of the county. Instrumental and vocal soloists, quartettes and octets competed too.

Little bits and pieces make a masterpiece
If you gave me a thousand pieces of colored glass, in my hands that would be a bucket of garbage for the land fill. If you gave those same thousand pieces to a person with an imagination and some creativity, there is a chance a mosaic masterpiece could result. A mosaic as you know is a picture or design made by placing small colored pieces, like tile, in a mortar. Or a painting of small dabs rather than broad strokes.

Stop making excuses and apologize
What are the two most difficult things any of us ever have to do — if we do them at all? One is to admit we were wrong. The second, even more difficult and painful, is to apologize for it.

Graduation day for Taylor and Tessa
Some of you may have had two children or grandchildren graduate on the same day, but probably not quite like the graduation day we have coming up.
