The timberwolf — a Minnesota native
The gray wolf is native to our area and still with us. We live with this mysterious creature, yet few of us ever get to see one.By Bernie Revering , November 20, 2009
A profile on the wiley brush wolf — the coyote
The coyote is also known as the brush wolf. The Aztecs attributed supernatural powers to the coyote. So did many northern Indians, who knew this small American wolf by another name. Sportsmen don’t relish coyote meat but some Indians do. No other carnivore has doubled or tripled his range in spite of man’s intrusion into his territory.By Bernie Revering , November 13, 2009
‘Tis the season for car-deer collisions
October and November are the prime months for deer to collide with automobiles. Most occur when you’re driving at or near the speed limit. Now, more than ever, is the time to be using your seat belts — driver as well as all passengers.

Minnesota deer season is almost here
The nine November days so eagerly awaited by Minnesotans are nearly here. The first two weeks include the time that most biologists regard as the rut. It is a time when hunters fashion the whitetail buck to be a bit more careless in his evasive behavior. This may be true to some extent, but usually the bucks don’t make many mistakes, so hunting them takes skill and savvy.

Stocking up on ‘bullets’
A piece ran in the Forum recently, concerning the continuing practice of gun owners to buy up all available handgun ammunition. The Associated Press writer used “bullets” interchangeably with “cartridge.”

Sight-in your deer rifle at BCSC
Time was when many a deer hunter took things for granted. It shot okay last November; I guess it’ll be right on this year.

Minnesota hunting will be good this fall
But to reach some of Minnesota’s good hunting may require a bit of travel. But we’re not opposed to some of that, as we can reach out and take part in some of the greatest hunting America has to offer.

Market hunting died near the turn of the century
In 1918, the market hunter was legislated out of business. He was finished anyway. His period ran for 40 years, generally along the Illinois River, in Arkansas and Kentucky.

Reloading is back — in a big way
Crafting your own ammunition — the practice is returning in a big way. Faced with ever increasing prices for factory made center-fire cartridges and shotgun shells, hunters and participants in the clay target games are discovering what their forebears learned long ago — handloading produces the best ammo and is a learning experience. There is a certain feeling of satisfaction in smashing a clay bird or dropping a big whitetail with ammo that you have created yourself.

Time to start thinking about waterfowl season
At the Mississippi Flyway Council meetings, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has offered Minnesota more liberal waterfowl limits, but our DNR for the second year in a row, has opted for more restrictive limits. Opening on Saturday, Oct. 3rd, it will run for sixty days.

The .22 rimfire — everybody’s gun
The .22 is indeed everybody’s gun. The .22 holds irresistible appeal for young shooters, and it comes at an early age. Very early if the parent is a hunter or shooter, as sure as shootin’ there will be a .22 rifle in the gun rack.

Are your firearms covered in your insurance?
I mean are the guns insured? And the other stuff? Are you sure about that? Guns are in peak demand in America these days.

The Canada goose — a problem not just in Minnesota
The Canada goose — who ever thought he’d become a problem? For a decade now, we’ve been using extreme measures to control the snow geese, with spring hunting seasons, electronic callers, high or no limits as to the numbers. It has helped some, but not enough.
