Vary jigging techniques to find more walleye

From the floods of the spring, the unseasonably cold summer, the transition into the poor weather of September and October — we are rewarded now with this an unseasonably warm and pleasant November.

A great week to go fishing, enjoy the outdoors

What a wonderful week to enjoy our beautiful area and the outdoor resources we have. The weather has been unseasonably warm and the forecast for the next week looks like we will be able to continue to fish open water.

Take this time to get ready for ice fishing PressPass

I will be a little short on the report side of this week “fishing lines” as other commitments kept me off the water for a stretch of days. I just went a full week without being on the water and that is the longest stretch for me since May. It is amazing how life interferes with life at times.

Downsize when cold fronts move in PressPass

Last week we talked about late fall season adjustments that included focusing mostly on jigging or rigging. One obvious adjustment we have to be aware of is the frequency of cold front conditions as the weather transitions toward our winter period. We can get a cold front on top of cold front, and the fish do change to a more neutral to negative attitude with feeding. Overall they “bulk up” for winter, but the cold fronts may slow feeding down or make the bite window a little shorter.

Bite, like weather, is inconsistant PressPass

I was out this week, and the weather has continued to be inconsistent, and for me the bite was as well. I had a couple of good outings, and a couple of poor outings. Late last week I was still getting “eyes” shallow rip jigging. One trip included some too big to keep, some eaters and some bonus big Northern in the 32-36” range.

Fall fishing picking up in area PressPass

Do not put your boats away yet! The bite has been good to great even with poor to rotten weather. Be careful when launching your boat now as all the lakes are lower and the accesses are shallow. Trim up and save on prop repairs. With the freezing temps at night, make sure you trim your motor down after getting on your trailer to drain water.

Zebra mussels can help a dirty lake, too PressPass

I mentioned last week I would comment on the discovery of Zebra Mussels in Pelican Lake. Zebra Mussels are an invasive species that get their name from the striped pattern of their shells. Most are about the size of a thumbnail, but can grow up to 2 inches. They have been in the U.S. since 1988 and appeared first in Lake St. Clair (between the Great Lakes of Huron and Erie). They are in numerous lakes and rivers in Minnesota now.

Inconsistant local area fishing should stabilize PressPass

We are going to talk fishing, but it is difficult to do without talking about the weather also. As of last week and the forecast for this next week, we are definitely into the start of a fall pattern for fishing.

Perham library hosts author’s presentation on ice fishing Oct. 10 PressPass

To the uninitiated, ice fishing seems improbable, wacky, and dangerous. But every winter, more than 2 million hardy northerners go to their place on the lake: literally on the lake.
