Time to say goodbye

We’ll be back after these important messages
I stayed home sick on Monday, a happening which, like most deviations from regularity, came with a few interesting implications.
First of all, it meant I didn’t go to work.

City living, but still just a small town girl
When I transferred to Hamline, a city school populated by city kids who graduated with more students than attend all of DLHS, it was difficult to explain where the bandwagon found me.
“It’s a pretty small town. We hang out at Perkins or drive around the lake for fun.”

Local group ‘jumps’ to Jamaica for mission trip
Ten members of United Methodist Church spent 10 days in Jamaica’s highlands, returning home with much more than their golden tans.
Organized through JUMP (Jamaica United Mission Partnership) and led by Greg and Marcia Potvin, the mission trip team had several reasons for journeying to Jamaica.

What’s in a name?
Before young miss Capulet knew she was to marry, fake her own death, drive her husband to drink himself to his, commit suicide and end literature’s lengthiest family feud within the week, she stood on her balcony, pondering the nature of names: “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose/By another other name would smell as sweet.”
But would it really?

‘Out with the old’ adage does not always apply
Some people do it every spring. Others every fall, each New Year, or any time they change addresses. There are people who never do it, and others who only do it when they “feel like it.” There are also those constantly in the midst of doing it.

Faith in humanity seems to be slipping away
When I got into my cherry cobbler car Monday morning, I was going to work, to gain some writing experience and make some money to pay for groceries, gas, housing and the occasional lunch date with Boyfriend or movie night with the gang.

Without proper guides, shower time can be dangerous
“Bring a notebook,” I advised my brother Monday morning as I urged my hair to dry faster.
“Really?” Montana queried, trying to sense how serious I was (it’s an expression I see on him often).

Anti-athlete takes on the Twins
When dusk falls on the Twin Cities and the skyline begins to blend into the darkening sky, there remains one shining beacon of hope in the heart of Minneapolis: Target Field.

A whole new sense of hearing
After a weekend in Kenosha “Kenowhere” Wisconsin, I’m hearing in a whole new light.
Last Thursday I hit the highway with Jake and Family for his cousin/my new pal Erin’s graduation. In a single Suburban space-consciously packed with two parents, three college kids, two preteens and a long weekend’s allotment of stuff times seven, we bravely began the 570-some mile drive to southeast Wisconsin’s “biggest small town you’ll ever see,” according to a freshly graduated Miss Erin.

Growing up: A work in progress
Commencement ceremonies can have many uses. More than a mere marker of time, symbol of accomplishment, acknowledgement of senior-to-freshman backslide, or awkward red-robed photo op, last weekend’s graduation (which I attended thanks to an ill-called coin flip) provided a meditative opportunity.

What would Uncle Al do? Fix it up and write a great column
Besides the one I share this page with, my favorite columnist is “Uncle” Al Sicherman, who spent many years writing humorous commentaries on daily life for the Star Tribune.

Abnormalities, inconsistencies are now the norm
It was a dull and homework-ridden afternoon. I sat on the third floor — the silent floor — of the library, reading about how crummy the human condition is.
