A trip to the zoo
Ah, deer hunting! ‘Tis the season for unshaven men, anxiety-ridden wives and mothers, new hunters bringing home their first kills (yay, Montana!), and trips to the zoo.By Thressa Johnson , November 18, 2009
Those students left behind pull off dance production
I came home last weekend to see West Side Story, and I’ve got to say: good job, kids. Truth be told, I wasn’t sure you could do it without us. But, somehow, you pulled it off. It was a terrific effort, really.By Thressa Johnson , November 11, 2009
And cats make 11
My boyfriend Jake lives in a duplex in Moorhead with seven people, two kittens and a ferret. Although a study on any one of them would be easily captivating due to their delightfully eclectic natures and ever-entertaining interactions, I’d like to focus on the latest additions: the entwined balls of fur currently sleeping next to me on the couch.

Television ‘reaps’ family bonding time
Due to mid-semester break, I had Monday and Tuesday off from classes, so I came home for the weekend and spent some quality time with family.

Tuition-free friends back home can save you
Over the past week, I’ve been exposed to several extremely different first-semester freshman college experiences. I guess that being so inextricably caught up in my own post-secondary-induced pandemonium meant forgetting to check in with everybody else to see how their chaos was coming.

A slip in fake blood sparks ‘sanguine’ topic
The other afternoon, I slipped and fell. This, in itself, is not a rare occurrence for me: I slip and fall often. I’m also quite accustomed to tripping, walking into doorframes, banging my hips on jutting countertops and veering into people as I attempt to walk beside them.

Communication a must have — instantly
In the not-so-distant past, Concordia held its yearly Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium. For a full 24 hours, the focus of seminars across campus was on finding “the We in an iWorld” by examining “technology and learning in the 21st Century.”

Learning the role of religion, football at college
For everyone with ties to Concordia, last weekend was Family Weekend (“When you’re ear, you’re family!”). Mom and Montana made the hefty trek to campus to see just how collegiate I’ve become.

Thressa Johnson column: Location of home as uncertain as DL Holiday Inn name
Last weekend, I made my way home for the first time since leaving for college. I know what you must be thinking...

College turns everything up, down, around, inside out
Well, here I am, writing my first column from Concordia College. I didn’t choose the school that had studio apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows, the one that promised debt-free graduation, or even the one that sent really cool stickers with my acceptance letter.

Thankfully these embarrassing stories never needed to be told
When I first started writing this column, I was pretty paranoid about whether I’d be able to find material every week.

Saying goodbye: After the tears, there is a silver lining for those leaving last for college
This week, while everyone was monitoring health care controversy and/or airing their feelings about Brett Favre, the first batch of freshmen moved off and into their new collegiate lives.

Seniors, it’s time to start preparing for the future
Last August I wrote a column advising incoming freshmen on how best to brave the throes of Detroit Lakes High School. In a few weeks, my brother will scour www.dl-online.com, wishing he’d read his sister’s columns devoutly and gleaned a little brilliance. (That kid’s going to miss me something terrible, but shh! He doesn’t know it yet.)

Turning into parents is a two-way street
Sitting in the living room one night, my brother, next to me on the couch, suddenly scrunched up his face, puffed out his lips, brought his arm to his mouth, and blew, making a noise like an elephant.

Fair visit brings inappropriate chicken cravings
So there I was, standing amongst the 10k crowd at the Umphrey’s McGee concert, when my phone vibrated in my pocket. Awed that I could feel it over the ground’s vibrations (I was standing about ten feet from the stage-right speakers), I took it out, typed a quick response text, and jammed my cell back in my pocket.
