Column: New Zealand change — the kind in your pocket
New Zealand has nearly eradicated change.
By change, I mean the stuff that jingles in your pocket when you come home from town, rattles in the drier, piles up on the dresser, ends up in a tupperware which one lugs to the bank every two years.
The ever-practical Kiwis are always tweaking their system, right down to their pocket change.

The snow that never came
As I looked out my window last Monday and saw all that beautiful glistening snow, I was jumping for joy. I could barely see out my window, the snow was so thick. Finally, my blizzard was here.

Bombarded by the ‘F-Bomb’
Enough is enough. We recently rented and watched “The Ides of March,” a movie about politics, dirty politics, in a presidential primary. The movie was co-written by one of the biggest names in the business, George Clooney. It was also co-produced by Clooney, directed by Clooney and Clooney co-starred in his own movie as a presidential candidate.

Life’s complete: Kissed by Olympian
In anticipation of the weekend ahead, I developed a severe case of Birkie Fever this past week. The American Birkenbiner/Kortelopet took place last weekend; it was as exciting as ever.
My dad and my brother, Dylan, skied the 54-kilometer race (the Birkie), while my friend, Zach, and I skied the 23K race (the Korte). In order to ski the Birkie, you must be 18. Sadly, I am not 18, so I have to participate in the Korte instead.

The end of the ice fishing season is here
I probably should have included the reminder about fish closing dates in my article last week when I also talked about fish house removal dates. Oh well, I am still not too late to get the message out for the few that may not know, or get confused about the opening and closing dates.

Eighth annual DIDO Awards
Every year about this time the Motion Picture Academy makes a huge production out of awarding Oscars to the best movies, actors, actresses, music, sound effects, etc. — all from the year before. The ceremony goes on for hours and it’s pure glitz: long speeches, emotional performances and plunging necklines.

First stop: Mangawhai, New Zealand
First stop in New Zealand: The coastal town of Mangawhai, north of Auckland, on the east coast, looking out towards several islands.

Get rid of ice chunks, garbage when removing fish houses
Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a few issues on several different lakes that need to be discussed. The issues are about safety and consideration for others. One concern is how many piles and/or blocks of ice I have seen just left on the ice. The blocks are usually left by spear fishermen after they move or remove their spear house. These blocks can be a hazard for others, especially at night. Can you imagine hitting one with your ATV, snowmobile, or vehicle?

Mother Nature painted a frosty landscape
You missed the show snowbirds. If you weren’t here the first week in February, you missed the show. While you were riding around in your golf buggies down there in Arizona, California, Texas and Florida, we had three or four days of fog and frost like we’ve rarely seen. The wind didn’t blow and it just held on day after day.
When it came to painting landscapes, there were many masters: Matisse, Poussin, Constable, Rousseau and Wyeth were just a few — but all are now dead.

Skiing to admirable second place finish
I keep hearing it on the news, over and over again about how lucky we are this year to be having a mild winter. Apparently, we are supposed to be happy.

Plan a fishing trip for great open water action
As we get into February now you will have a chance to fish all the area fishing derbies. It won’t be long after they are done and we will be into March. This can be time to consider all the options that are available to you for fishing in March and April. Depending on weather and ice conditions you can still chase after local bite options.

Gone down under to New Zealand
After fifteen years of loyalty to Arizona, this winter brings a new warm weather destination: New Zealand.

The miserable childhood
Let me be blunt. If you want more interesting writing in this corner of the paper, you shouldn’t be reading my column. I don’t have the background for it. Ernest Hemingway wrote that the best early training for a writer is an unhappy childhood.

Find another fishing-related hobby to get you through
I am aware that some read this article on a regular basis and aren’t into ice fishing get bored with me from December until about April. This week is for you. You are the hardcore open water fishermen. You probably get impatient for the winter to get over so the lakes become liquid again. You watch fishing shows, reorganize your tackle boxes, spend time online looking for the latest gear for the upcoming season, and read articles to pass the time until you can launch your boat.

ALC gets bad rep, but actually very good
So I was watching a TV show a few weeks back, I don’t know what the show was, but a lady quoted “high school were some of the best times of my life; I made some of the best memories I have.”
