Record as governor haunted Pawlenty
Tim Pawlenty’s real problem in the past few months wasn’t presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann.
Pawlenty’s real problem was Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels. Because in any evaluation of the records of the two much-talked-about governors, Pawlenty suffers by comparison.

Extremes make gridlock inevitable
A couple weeks ago, Gov. Mark Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature made a budget deal which, in essence, leaves it up to the voters in 2012 to determine the course of Minnesota’s future.
It appears the federal government has done the same.
The legislation that solves the federal debt crisis pairs an increase in the government’s borrowing cap with promises of more than $2 trillion of budget cuts over the upcoming decade.

America’s and Norway’s common foe
The enemy isn’t ideology. The enemy isn’t extremism.
The enemy is terrorism, the unsanctioned use of mass violence to achieve political ends. That’s what links the recent attacks in Oslo with Sept. 11. That’s what connects Anders Breivik with Timothy McVeigh, the Unabomber, members of the Weather Underground from the 1960s and ’70s and others who murder to score political points.

State shutdown a shame to both parties
Since when has compromise become a dirty word?
And since when have deadlines failed to spur action for getting work finished?

Dreaded shutdown day has come
“There was a bit of a mad scramble Wednesday to assure that onsale liquor licenses will be updated and legal after July 1,” read a front-page Worthington Daily Globe story Thursday about potential impacts of a state government shutdown in Worthington.

Chamber reps call on legislators to compromise
Summer should be a grand time in Minnesota, with parades, flag waving and other festivities in the offing, but unless the legislature and governor agree on a budget compromise, government shutdown will put a damper on those festivities. It’ll be July 4th without the sparkle and for many families it will be a real hardship.

It’s time for Minnesota GOP to give a little in budget fight
If the intention of Minnesota residents in electing a Republican Legislature and a Democratic governor was to ultimately take a balanced approach to the $5 billion budget deficit — that is, not too heavy on either spending cuts or tax increases — clearly, the leadership in the House and Senate didn’t see it that way.

Collaboration needed to balance budget
When a bill was passed at the State Capitol to eliminate Local Government Aid (LGA) from Minneapolis, Saint Paul and Duluth, mayors from greater Minnesota and across the state didn’t lie low: instead, they came to the defense of Minnesota’s job-creating core cities and have stood by us in defending a policy that has served our entire state well for over 40 years.

Budget would stall slowly churning economic engine
Minnesota lawmakers are putting finishing touches on a conservative-crafted budget that could toss the state back to the brink of recession, further kick the foundation out of housing prices, and speed rural Minnesota’s out-migration.

Conspiracy nuts have a big week
It’s no surprise that enemies and detractors of the United States are denying that a U.S. Navy SEAL team killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist organization al Qaida. It’s all a hoax, they are saying. Bin Laden would never be living in a relatively posh suburban neighborhood, they are saying. They are asking: Where is the proof, the photos? It’s another Western ploy, they say — and, we suspect, really believe it.

Practice of tornado safety is critical in Minnesota
America’s tornado season is well under way — as was demonstrated last Wednesday as multiple killer tornadoes ripped across the South killing at least 284 people across six states.
Experts say the storm that spawned a tornado formed in Mississippi and traveled for over 300 miles.

Obliteration in the south cries for help from the north
We complain sometimes about our weather. Hey, we’re only human. The grumbling has been particularly loud this unseasonably cold, miserably wet and ridiculously snowy spring.

Wisconsin squabbling takes yet another turn
Much has been made of the Wisconsin law that strips most public employees of virtually all their collective bargaining rights. While sight of the actual legislation shouldn’t be lost — and let’s be honest, the measure is much more about weakening unions than saving state dollars — what’s happened as a result of it are political shenanigans that are regrettable to say the least.
