License costs may increase
The Minnesota Legislature is currently considering a bill, which if enacted, would increase the cost of a resident fishing license to $21 in 2011 and to $25 in 2015. Today, a fishing license costs $17. The DNR has not asked for an increase, or provided support for the bill. The committee that oversees the DNR budget has recommended a license fee increase. The Game & Fish Fund, which is made up largely from license sales, will dip into the red in 2014.

That wild, gamey taste on your dinner table
Fortunate indeed, are the families of hunters and fishermen who bring home their venison, pheasant, grouse, or the fish they catch. Not all Americans get the taste of the wild. Not all of us like that wild taste, either.

The colorful wood duck
Plentiful in the wooded areas adjacent to sloughs and marshes, we do enjoy our wood ducks. Most people will name the male wood duck as the handsomest of all wild birds. Yes, the greenhead mallard drake is colorful too, but it doesn’t have the display of colors that a wood duck drake has.

The 16 gauge — it’s not dead yet!

Deer-car collisions are on the rise in Minnesota
Car-deer collisions often deadly, and there are too many. These misfortunes are on the rise in Minnesota. They are most frequent in November and December, when the deer are chasing does and presumably leave caution to the wind. We are in the midst of deer-car collision season right now. And plenty of them occur right here. Heavily forested Highway 34 on the way to Ogema and Park Rapids is a particularly bad stretch of highway. No restrictions on speed except to the posted, which is so easily ignored. A collision is no small problem and it can turn deadly, especially for a motorcyclist. The financial loss can be extreme, the insurance coverage notwithstanding.
