Waterfowl success still a good bet in cooler weather 
Those who have not yet hunted waterfowl this fall shouldn’t fear that the ducks have passed them by, according to Steve Cordts, waterfowl specialist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The season’s best waterfowl hunting could be on its way, with conditions becoming “ducky” as cooler, wetter weather moves in.

Minnesota’s pheasant index falls 64 percent 
A severe winter followed by a wet spring contributed to a significant decline in Minnesota’s pheasant counts. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the pheasant population index declined 64 percent from 2010 and is 71 percent below the 10-year average.

MN deer licenses on sale Aug. 1 
Minnesota hunters will be able to purchase 2011 deer licenses starting Monday, Aug. 1, the same day the state’s hunting regulation booklet is available online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense. Booklets will be available in mid-August.

U.S. duck numbers remain strong 
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released its preliminary report on breeding ducks and habitats, based on surveys conducted in May and early June. Total duck populations were estimated at 45.6 million breeding ducks on the surveyed area. This estimate represents an 11 percent increase over last year’s estimate of 40.9 million birds and is 35 percent above the 1955-2010 long-term average.
