Practice good etiquette at the boat launch
Now that the open water season will be getting into full swing it is time to mention again the importance of good etiquette at the boat ramps.

Get out on the lake for early season crappies
This is the earliest ice out I can ever remember. This means we will have many opportunities for pan fish outings before the walleye and northern pike “opener.” This year’s opening date for walleyes and northern pike is May 12. Bass fishing will open May 26, and Muskie will open June 2.

Get ready for open water fishing
What a spring! When was the last time you can remember no snow and open water by the 1st of April? It is hard to remember when I have seen the ice conditions deteriorate as rapidly as we have experienced over the last week to ten days. It is time to get all your spring chores done and get the boats ready for an extended early season on crappies, sunfish, and perch.

The end of the ice fishing season is here
I probably should have included the reminder about fish closing dates in my article last week when I also talked about fish house removal dates. Oh well, I am still not too late to get the message out for the few that may not know, or get confused about the opening and closing dates.

Get rid of ice chunks, garbage when removing fish houses
Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a few issues on several different lakes that need to be discussed. The issues are about safety and consideration for others. One concern is how many piles and/or blocks of ice I have seen just left on the ice. The blocks are usually left by spear fishermen after they move or remove their spear house. These blocks can be a hazard for others, especially at night. Can you imagine hitting one with your ATV, snowmobile, or vehicle?

Plan a fishing trip for great open water action
As we get into February now you will have a chance to fish all the area fishing derbies. It won’t be long after they are done and we will be into March. This can be time to consider all the options that are available to you for fishing in March and April. Depending on weather and ice conditions you can still chase after local bite options.

Find another fishing-related hobby to get you through
I am aware that some read this article on a regular basis and aren’t into ice fishing get bored with me from December until about April. This week is for you. You are the hardcore open water fishermen. You probably get impatient for the winter to get over so the lakes become liquid again. You watch fishing shows, reorganize your tackle boxes, spend time online looking for the latest gear for the upcoming season, and read articles to pass the time until you can launch your boat.

Portable fish houses offer mobility, ability to chase the bite
The DNR’s Hutchinson Fisheries Management Area personnel conduct a fish house numbers survey the first two weeks of January every year. They have been doing this for 35 years. The survey covers seven counties and a total of 59 lakes. This year set the record for the fewest number of fish houses for the 35 years they have been conducting this survey.

It’s fishing derby time
We are now at the time in the hard water season you can participate in ice fishing tournaments and derbies. They will be available somewhere in the state every weekend now until the end of February. The reason for the January and February dates are to take advantage of quality ice conditions. Many of them are a part of events associated with community winter fest activities. Most of the events are used as fundraisers for good causes in their local communities.

Make smart decisions on the hard water
By now, most ice fisherman from the area have heard about some of the problems that have occurred with a few fish houses on some of the area lakes. The number one problem that has drawn the most attention has been the fish houses that have broken through the ice.

Make a commitment about your fishing in 2012
It is hard to believe we have already completed 2011 and we are at 2012. The year seemed to fly by like it was only 364 days! As I get older, it seems that all the years pass more quickly. How did I get this old so fast?

Mild conditions, good ice make fishing enjoyable
Happy holidays during this unusual stretch of unseasonably warm weather we have been having. I don’t remember the last time we didn’t have a white Christmas.

Ice fishing is good in early morning, late evening
We have had another great week of ice producing weather for our area lakes. Ice fishing is in full swing and most lakes are close to 12 inches or more of good clear ice. You will be able to travel on the smaller lakes with light vehicles this week. Larger pickups should be good to go by Christmas on most of the bodies of water in our area. As always, check ice conditions before venturing out onto the lakes.

Anglers, icehouses on lakes mean ice fishing season
We have 4-8 inches of ice on most of the smaller lakes in our area. The ice is good clear ice as we have had a good week of making ice. It helps that we have not had any snow accumulation, and we have had several cloudy days during the daytime.

EARLY ICE: Fishing can be hot on the first ice of the season
First ice or early ice has long been known to be a time when the bite can be hot. Because of this, some anglers will venture out very early to take advantage of this action. It has to be a “proceed with caution” and safety in mind approach. If you have not been on early ice yourself before, make sure you partner up with a veteran ice angler. Not only will they know how to check and read the ice, but they will help put you in a location that can offer the success that early ice can provide.
