A noodle by any other name...
The readers of this column have come to expect an occasional discussion of the important and interesting foods we eat here in America.
Foreign readers, for that matter, also eagerly anticipate discussions about American foods.

The rules keep on changing
You were probably shocked in 2006 when the ninth planet, Pluto, was demoted to a Kuiper Belt Object and could no longer be considered a planet. This was largely the handiwork of Mike Brown, professor of Planetary Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

That amazing bakery aroma
It’s been a long week and a half in town. For what seems like forever, a sign on the door of our main street bakery has said: “Closed — March 12 - 20. Open again on March 21st.” What? No goodies this week?

I shot my bridge partner
“I Shot My Bridge Partner” is the name of a mystery novel I have not read and will not read because it could have been written by various bridge partners I had before they retired my jersey some years ago. Bridge players do not take the game casually, but I did. Not good. One famous bridge player, Kelley Hwang, among the winners of the Grand National Teams Championship a few years ago, tells that he started playing because his marriage was rocky, so he and his wife started to play bridge in search of an activity they could do together.

Bombarded by the ‘F-Bomb’
Enough is enough. We recently rented and watched “The Ides of March,” a movie about politics, dirty politics, in a presidential primary. The movie was co-written by one of the biggest names in the business, George Clooney. It was also co-produced by Clooney, directed by Clooney and Clooney co-starred in his own movie as a presidential candidate.

Eighth annual DIDO Awards
Every year about this time the Motion Picture Academy makes a huge production out of awarding Oscars to the best movies, actors, actresses, music, sound effects, etc. — all from the year before. The ceremony goes on for hours and it’s pure glitz: long speeches, emotional performances and plunging necklines.

Mother Nature painted a frosty landscape
You missed the show snowbirds. If you weren’t here the first week in February, you missed the show. While you were riding around in your golf buggies down there in Arizona, California, Texas and Florida, we had three or four days of fog and frost like we’ve rarely seen. The wind didn’t blow and it just held on day after day.
When it came to painting landscapes, there were many masters: Matisse, Poussin, Constable, Rousseau and Wyeth were just a few — but all are now dead.

The miserable childhood
Let me be blunt. If you want more interesting writing in this corner of the paper, you shouldn’t be reading my column. I don’t have the background for it. Ernest Hemingway wrote that the best early training for a writer is an unhappy childhood.

Courage is a test of physical, moral challenges
On Dec. 31, the Utah Highway Patrol reported that a 46-year-old driver with two nine-year-old girls and a four-year-old boy in his car, slipped off an icy road, rolled down an embankment and landed upside down in the frigid Logan River.

Singin’ the Broke Tooth Blues
If you’re a fan of the blues, you probably know that they now have little mainstream appeal. Observers say the blues are now passé, past their prime, out of date. How can that be? Are pain, betrayal, broken hearts and discouragement out of date?

In art, it can take chutzpah
“Hey mom, look at me!”
Any time you are near a playground, a swimming pool or a beach, you hear the little kids shouting to their moms and pleading for attention. In political campaigns, the effort may be more grown up, but no more subtle: “I had real experience working with Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher... I worked with Reagan in the early 80s developing strategy for the Soviet Empire.”

Bless the hands that came before mine
I was helping my daughter, Goldilocks, with a hammer and nail project a few weeks ago and days later I noticed that I had a black fingernail on the middle finger of my left hand. Although I didn’t remember putting a hammer to that nail, there is no other explanation.

2011-12 reflections and predictions
Can you believe it — 2011 is almost over already. Time does fly — the paint just dried on 2010. So now it’s time to reflect on the events of the past year and fearlessly forecast what we can look for in 2012.

‘Merry Christmas’ I shouted
“Merry Christmas!” I shouted to a woman on the street.
But she didn’t hear me.
Her misty eyes stared halfway round the globe
Where her son was lost in Afghanistan
And never found his way home.

Burning the midnight oil
As I was heading for an 8 o’clock appointment for my car this morning, I was hoping the mechanics would be guys who do their best work first thing in the morning. After all, we know there are “morning people” and there are “night owls.” I didn’t want some night owl who had been watching tv until 2 a.m. or out on the town last night working on my car. After all, it’s a 2006 model — practically new.
