'Blues, Brews & BBQs' will feature Holm, Cranston

The savory smell of slow-cooked meats needs little accompaniment, but if you throw

in some sizzling blues and ice-cold beer, it's like adding a secret-recipe sauce.

That's the idea behind Blues, Brews, and BBQs, a farewell-to-summer outdoor concert event to be held outside Sickies Garage this Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 13-15.

Headlining the concert will be the popular Johnny Holm Band, harmonica blues legend Lamont Cranston with his band, and fiery blues guitarist Popa Chubby.

Other acts performing during the event include: Charlie Parr, Lisa Wenger, Ross William Perry, Moody River Band, Cadillac Kolstad, Diane Miller, Jeff Mooridian, and Rob Ashe.

Blues, Brews, and BBQs will offer a variety of food vendors as well as family-friendly activities on Saturday from Games To Go.

The North Dakota BBQ Championship will be held as part of the event on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Contestants will have the opportunity to compete in any of three different categories: ribs, pork, and chicken.

Individual categories will be crowned and combined scores from all three categories will be used to determine an overall grand champion.

In all, $5,000 in prize money will be split among all winners.

The competition is overseen by Eric Berg, David Newman, and Chris Newman. Berg and David Newman are professor and assistant professor, respectively, in North Dakota State University's Meat-Animal Science Department. The duo also organizes the popular BBQ Boot Camp, a program that teaches barbeque techniques in seminars hosted across the state.

Chris Newman is an award-winning BBQer and owner/ member of the Rack Pack Barbecue Team catering company in Jonesboro, Ark.
