'Peers to Piers' is free every Tuesday in DL

The Department of Natural Resources wants to make sure all kids that want to fish have that chance.

Through the MinnAqua education program, the DNR is hosting the Peers to Piers program in Detroit Lakes each Tuesday night this summer from 6:30-8:30. It is free for children 15 and under to fish, and all bait and equipment is furnished through the DNR and Quality Bait and Tackle.

Fishing lines will be cast from the Little Detroit pier across West Lake Drive from El Loro Mexican restaurant.

“We’re trying to reach out to single parents who don’t know how to fish or maybe don’t have enough money to buy fishing equipment to take their kids fishing, but it’s open to the public so anyone that is interested in angling and maybe don’t have a fishing rod, we provide all the fishing equipment, the bait, tackle,” said Kyle Quittschreiber, who will be helping the young fishermen and women Tuesday nights.

For kids ages 16-17, fishing licenses are $5, and adults require a fishing license if they plan to fish. If parents are just coming to watch their children fish, they do not need a fishing license.

“Even the people who just want to stop by with questions or want to chat about anything, there’s always a DNR staff there from 6:30 to 8:30,” Quittschreiber said.

Each child that participates also gets to take home a starter tackle box with a bobber, hook and sinker, he added.

This is the second year the DNR has used the MinnAqua education program to teach kids to fish. Quittschreiber said they had about a dozen kids each Tuesday last year and wants to get the word out this year in hopes of getting even more kids on the lakes.

“I know they’re out there, and there are even adults out there that don’t really know how to fish or don’t have the equipment,” he said.
