Miss Minnesota wins talent competition at Miss America

SARAH MORREIM PHOTOGRAPHY Rebecca Yeh was named the winner of Wednesday night’s talent competition at the 2013 Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., for her violin performance. The pageant concludes tonight with the crowning of the new Miss America in a live broadcast on ABC Television.

Miss Minnesota, Rebecca Yeh, was named Wednesday night’s Preliminary Talent winner at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., for her violin performance “Scherzo and Tarantella” by Henri Wieniawski.

Yeh was also crowned Miss Northwest 2012.

Yeh, a classically trained violinist, will receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Miss America Organization.

Also in the spotlight was Miss Oklahoma, Kelsey Griswold, who was the preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness winner in a black Miss America by Catalina swimsuit.

Kelsey will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

It has been 25 years since Minnesota has brought home a preliminary talent award at the Miss America pageant. The last time this occurred was when Gretchen Carlson competed and went on to become Miss America 1989.

Both women played classical violin, and Gretchen Carlson also won a Preliminary Talent Award during the competition.

Final night of the Miss America competition will be broadcast live on ABC today (Sunday) at 8 p.m.

The Miss America Organization is one of the nation’s leading achievement programs and the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations provided more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance.
