The October MAC-NAPS distribution is from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, DL. Applications are available at St. Luke’s Church. To qualify you must be at least 60 years of age and meet the USDA income guidelines.

Veterans Affairs meeting

Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) leadership is in DL from 9-10 a.m. in the Becker County Courthouse to meet with citizens and members of the Minnesota Veterans community. The town hall tour is focused on updating local officials, community leaders, and Veteran’s organizations about recent reforms passed under Gov. Dayton’s leadership, like the improved Minnesota GI Bill that will benefit Minnesota Veterans and their families.

Saturday, Oct. 5

Adult Spanish Club

On the 5th of each month, join the adult Spanish Club at El Loro to practice your conversation skills. Drinks are at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7.

Fall hike

Join the Laurentian Lakes Chapter for a fall hike on the North Country National Scenic Trail. This hike is through a mixed forest that follows the Laurentian divide. Meet at the Elbow Lake Rd. trailhead at 1 p.m. for a 4-mile hike to the Hwy 113 trailhead. We’ll provide a shuttle ride back to your vehicle. This trailhead is about two miles west of Becker Co. Writers conference

The Lake Region Writers Network presents “Landscapes of the Writer” writers conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at M State, Fergus Falls. Keynote speaker is naturalist, poet and educator Joe Paddock. There will be workshops for all skill levels. For more info or to register, go to

Damien Home Tour

The Damien Home Tour is from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available from Damien members, DL Newspapers, DL Chamber, Detroit Paint & Glass La De Da Décor & Design and Wild Goose in Perham.

Let’s Go Fishing walk

The Detroit Lakes Area Chapter of Let’s Go Fishing hosts this year’s “Walk for Let’s Go Fishing” at the Detroit Lakes City Beach. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 and the awards and chili feed at 11.

Safety Day

Kmart hosts Safety Day in the parking lot from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be the Becker County Sheriff Department, St. Mary’s EMS, Detroit Lakes Fire Department and State Patrol present from 10 a.m. to noon. All young people are welcome to come meet all these important people and see their equipment. For the kids, there will also be various games, including a coloring contest, free stickers and a treat.

Sunday, Oct. 6

Pancake breakfast

The Knights of Columbus sponsor a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center.


The 17th annual Oktoberfest celebration is from noon to 8 p.m. in the Frazee event Center. Cost is $10 per person. Dance to music by Leon Olsen Band and Marie and the Boys. There will be German food, snacks and a cash bar available.

Roast beef supper

Hegland Lutheran Church, rural Hawley, hosts its annual Roast Beef Supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults, $4 for children 6-12, and children under 6 are free. 

Lakes Plus dance

Lakes Plus hosts a square dance from 2-4:30 p.m. at 118 W. Holmes St. in Detroit Lakes. Roger McNeil will call the tips. There will be potluck finger foods for lunch. Visitors and spectators are always welcome.

Sacred Heart fundraiser

Sacred Heart Parish, Frazee, hosts an auction to raise fund for repairs to the church steeple. The auction begins at noon. There will be sandwiches and drinks available along with pie and ice cream.

Hike for Hope

The 13th annual North Country Trail Hike for Hope begins at access. The hike will take the newly developed spur trail beginning on the south side of the parking area and continuing about 3.5 miles to the North Country Trail. The Waboose Lake

Public Access is north of Nevis on County Rd 2 and Inner Forest Rd about 10 miles. A car pool will leave from Muskie Park in Nevis about 12:30 p.m.

Monday, Oct. 7

The Rose Ensemble

The Rose Ensemble performs as part of The Roots of Bluegrass Greater Minnesota Tour at 7 p.m. in First Lutheran Church, DL. Tickets are $12 for adults or $9 for seniors and students with ID. Buy two and get one free.

Catholic Daughters mtng

Catholic Daughters of Court No. 1916 at Holy Rosary Church meets following the 5:15 p.m. Mass. Everyone is invited to attend Mass and then go directly to the meeting in the St. Scholastica Room. This is our Unity and Cheer meeting and all current members are encouraged to attend. It is also the meeting to welcome new members or potential members. Everyone is welcome.

Overeaters Anonymous

Overeaters Anonymous Detroit Lakes Serenity Group meets Tuesdays at noon in the second floor library of the First Lutheran Church.

Sons of Norway

Vikingland Lodge No. 495, Detroit Lakes, meets at 7 p.m. in Union Central, Detroit Lakes. The program is Calvin Nodsle spent a year in Finland through the Rotary exchange program and he will tell about his school year as a student in Finland. The public is invited to attend the meeting.

Missions conference

The Missions Conference 2013 is at Community Alliance Church. Meet Soeuth and Syna Lao from Poipet, Cambodia. On Oct. 4 is a family dinner and “World Tour” from 5-8 p.m., with a free chili supper served at 5, and then kids get a “passport” and “travel” through various countries learning about culture and missions work. On Oct. 5 is Getting to know Missionaries and How to Pray for them, and on Oct. 6, the missions speakers will be at all three morning services and Children’s Sunday School.

Mini flower show

The public is invited to participate in a flower show consisting of miniature floral arrangements on Saturday, Oct. 12. The miniature arrangements must be five inches or less. Only natural plant materials, fresh, treated, or dried may be used in the design. Mini arrangements can be entered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Lake Region Garden Club is sponsoring the flower show at Lakes Homes, Inc. (847 Hwy 10 East, Detroit Lakes). There is no limit on the number of entries a participant can enter. Judging of the designs will start at 1 p.m., with first, second, and third place awards in the novice, amateur, and advance divisions. A program on floral arranging by Val Voigt from Detroit Lakes Floral will be presented at 1. The flower show will be open for public viewing at 2:30 p.m. during the silver tea.

Coat give-away

Trinity Lutheran Church, DL, hosts a coat give-away (winter coats, hats, shoes, mittens, sweatshirts and other clothing). Items are on a first come, first serve basis, and sizes child to adult are available. The give-away is Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Oct. 14-16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Kalberer fund

A benefit account has been set up for First Security Bank, Detroit Lakes, for Aaron and Tess Kalberer. Aaron was seriously burned in a garage fire on Aug. 28, and is undergoing skin grafting surgeries at Hennepin County Burn Center.

Rifle sight-in

The Becker County Sportmen’s Club holds a rifle sight-in on Nov. 2-3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be no charge for members showing their current membership card. Others are charged $5 per gun. Youth shooters ages 12-18 will be admitted free by showing their MN Firearms safety Certificate.
