Hibbing school district accused of discrimination

HIBBING, Minn. -- The Hibbing school district is being investigated by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights after it received complaints alleging discrimination based on race, sex and sexual orientation.

Hibbing Superintendent Robert Belluzzo said he was notified that the complaint was made in early September, and investigators interviewed students and staff a couple of weeks ago. He hasn’t heard from the department since, he said.

He said it would appear that the report dealt with student complaints, and not staff, against the district, but said any other information about allegations has been “vague.”

“We’re working with the Department of Human Rights and cooperating,” Belluzzo said. “We’re waiting to hear more information from them, and we take these kinds of issues very seriously.”

The state Human Rights Department does not comment on open investigations.
