She’s the symbol of a new year, new life, new hope.

Becker County’s New Year’s baby was born at Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes on Thursday morning at 4:46 a.m.

Mom, Julie Weaver, and dad, Gus Deegan, of Mahnomen haven’t named their new little daughter yet, but say she was born happy and really ready to go.

The couple experienced a frantic drive from Mahnomen to Detroit Lakes in the wee-hours of Jan. 2 as they arrived at the hospital at 4:40 a.m.

“And she was born six minutes later — she wasn’t going to wait,” smiled Weaver as she held her 8 pound, 6 ounce, 20 inch-long baby girl.

For dad, 2014 really started off with a bang.

“It was traumatic,” he laughed, “There was no time for an epidural or anything, so she (Weaver) was screaming bloody murder.”

“I scared him,” added Weaver, laughing.

But once things settled down, the couple had the newest little addition to their family, which also includes big sister, Jaylen (15 months old), and big brother, Tyron (5 years old).

“They’ve been up to visit her — they’re pretty excited to get us home,” said Weaver, who says she expects to be released Saturday.

Because Weaver wasn’t due until Jan. 5, she says they hadn’t given a thought to possibly having the county’s New Year’s baby.

“I think maybe she just couldn’t wait to meet us,” she smiled, adding that their new little girl has a lot of relatives back in Mahnomen to meet as well.

“Her grandma came up to see her, a few cousins, aunties…” said Weaver, who says they’re all being very helpful in name suggestions. “Yeah, their names,” she laughed, confident they’d settle on something before they left the hospital.

“I just can’t believe she’s here already,” said Weaver, “She’s so beautiful.”
