J.C. Penney stores in Wahpeton, Thief River Falls to close; DL and West Acres stores to stay open
WAHPETON, N.D. -- Three J.C. Penney stores in North Dakota, including one in Wahpeton, as well as eight stores in Minnesota are slated for closing, according to a list the company released as part of its plans to close 138 stores nationwide.
The Detroit Lakes store will remain open.
Store locations on the closure list include Wahpeton, Dickinson, and Jamestown in North Dakota, and Baxter, Fairmont, Faribault, Hibbing, Hutchinson, Red Wing, Thief River Falls and Winona in Minnesota.
The J.C. Penney store in Fargo’s West Acres Shopping Center is not on the list. Earlier this month, West Acres CEO Brad Schlossman told The Forum that he was confident the retailer would stay open at the mall.
“We have close to zero concern that they would ever be on a closing list,” he said on March 6.
J.C. Penney Co. said about 5,000 positions nationwide will be affected by the store closings, most of which are expected to occur in June.
The company said it will provide outplacement support services for eligible employees.
Most affected stores will start the liquidation process on April 17, the company said.
