'For the Birds' Concert: Kicking off Detroit Lakes' 21st Annual Festival of Birds is this delightful concert featuring the work of composer Victor Zupanc, humorist/storyteller Kevin Kling and four-piece music ensemble Zeitgeist, which gets underway at 7 p.m. on the main stage of the Historic Holmes Theatre (826 Summit Ave.). Library Mural Project: Children in grades K-5 are invited to join library staff for an afternoon art workshop inspired by author and artist Hervé Tullet. The group will work together to create a colorful mural to be displayed in the library. This event is offered free of charge and will be held at 4 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave. No registration is required, but children should wear clothes suitable for painting.

Laurentian Lakes Chapter Nature Hike: Join the Laurentian Lakes Chapter of the North Country Trail Association as they hike the completed trail section through Maplewood State Park. This is a three mile guided hike with options for a longer hike while visiting the park. Meet at the entrance to Maplewood State Park at 10 a.m., or to carpool from Detroit Lakes, meet at the M State east parking lot at 9 a.m., rain or shine. Bring water and a snack. Youth ATV Safety Training: The Woods-n-Wheels ATV Club is hosting a Youth ATV Safety Training session in the basement of the Detroit Lakes VFW, starting at 8:30 a.m. The driving skills session starts about 15 minutes after the completion of the classroom session, and will be held west of the junction of Highways 10 and 59, in the field behind the Oak Hills addition. Pre-registration for this class is required; cost for the session is $30. Color Guard Breakfast: The Lake Region Veterans Color Guard will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Club. Suggested donation is $7 for a meal including scrambled eggs; pancakes or French toast; and sausage or bacon, plus beverage.
Wildlife Movie: Come to the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge for a free wildlife movie presentation at 2 p.m. This week's movie is "Crane Song." Every year some 80 percent of the world's Sandhill Cranes make their way through the 75 mile stretch of Nebraska's central Platte River Valley on their spring migration. "Crane Song" weaves together striking visuals and majestic sounds of the birds' journey with the storiesand insights of the people who observe them. Run time is approximately 60 minutes. Community Worship Service: An evening worship service for everyone in the lakes area is set to take place at 6:30 p.m. at True Life Assemblies of God Church, 18330 State Highway 59 North, Detroit Lakes. Several area churches will be participating.
Hearts on Fire Spaghetti Dinner: Grace Lutheran Church, located at 213 Roosevelt Ave., Detroit Lakes, is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go to support local first responders and firefighters.

Plant Sale: The University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners program will host a plant sale from 8-11 a.m. at the Detroit Lakes City Park on South Washington Avenue. Plant selection will include pollinator-friendly native plants; the Becker County Master Gardeners will be on hand to talk planting tips as well.
Leather Up for Lupus: The Detroit Lakes Eagles Aerie will host its 3rd Annual Leather Up for Lupus Charity Ride starting at 1 p.m., with registration set to get underway at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Eagles Club on Holmes Street. Registration is $20 for motorcycle riders and cars and $10 for passengers. The ride this year will travel to the Fergus Falls Eagles Aerie, then return to Detroit Lakes for dinner and door prizes starting at 6 p.m. The Eagles Club along with ABATE is still working to finalize the route for this year's ride. Detroit Lakes Area Pickleball: The outdoor pickleball courts at Peoples Park in Detroit Lakes are now open for the season. Everyone is welcome to use one of the five outdoor courts, which are located just behind Zorbaz. They will be open to the public 24 hours a day, but scheduled play will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon every Monday through Friday, as well as on Monday and Thursday evenings starting at 7 p.m. In case of bad weather, play will be moved indoors to the courts at the community center. Tai Chi Chih Classes: Free outdoor drop-in practices for learning T'ai Chi Chih will be held every Monday and Friday through June 29 at the United Methodist Church Memorial Garden, 885 Pembina Trail, Detroit Lakes.
