Moenkedick to play in Lions

All-Star Game

Philip Moenkedick of Perham, has been chosen for the Northern All-Star team in the 33rd Annual Lions All-Star Baseball Tournament. Moenkedick will join 80 other 2007 Minnesota high school graduates who have been singled out for exceptional achievement in baseball.

He joins his teammates on Friday, June 22, and Saturday, June 23, for a four-team, round-robin tournament at the Chaska Athletic Park in Chaska, Minn.

A recent graduate of Perham High School, Moenkedick will pitch and field for the Northern team. Next baseball season will find him at Concordia College, Moorhead. He will also wrestle for the Cobbers.

The Lions All-Star Tournament is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank and the Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Association and benefits the Lions Children's Eye Clinic at the University of Minnesota. The clinic sees more than five-thousand children each year and is a national leader in pediatric eye care. In the 32-year history of the tournament, $293,000 has been raised for the Children's Eye Clinic.

Perham Pacers running club Starts June 27

With the fantastic success of the Perham High School cross country and track teams, combined with the popularity of the TurtleFest 5K and 10K runs and the Average Jo Triathlon, it's no surprise that community members in Perham are now forming their own running club.

The Perham Pacers Community Running Club is looking for people of all ages and abilities to join them Wednesday night's starting June 27. The club will run every Wednesday through Aug. 29.

The Pacers will meet at Arvig Park Wednesday night's at 7 p.m. for a training runs varying from two to eight miles around the Cal Miller Bike Path, Paul Miller Park and the Perham High School cross country course at the Pioneer Grounds.

"Our goal is to encourage running for all ages and all abilities to make running and exercise a life-long habit," said founder Jeff Morris. "We hope to sponsor a Wednesday night racing and workout series with youth runs during the month of August."

The cost to run every Wednesday is $1 to cover costs for gatorade and prizes given each week.

Turtlefest 5K-10K

Sign-up now to take part in the 12th Annual Turtlefest 5K and 10K runs and 5K walk. The event will take place June 23 at 9 a.m. at Paul Miller Park, located 1.5 miles north of Main St. on Cty. Rd. 51.

Cost to enter the race is $10 if registered before June 17, or $15 after that. Checks should be made payable to Perham Turtlefest Road Race.

Pre-registration will take place on race day starting at 7:45 a.m.

There will be classes divided up by age and gender. Awards will be given to the top-three in each division and the first three male and female overall finishers.

lessons available

Former New York Mills and St. John's tennis standout Neil Koehler is offering private tennis lessons this summer.

Koehler, a United States Tennis Association (USTA) member, will be offering lessons for $20 per hour.

Bike Club in Cormorant

The Lakes Area Bike Club's next ride will be on Tuesday, June 26 in the Cormorant area. Riders should meet at 6:30 p.m. at The Pub Restaurant, located at the intersection of Becker County Roads 5 and 11.

There will be varying ride lengths and helmets are recommended. There is no charge to ride with the club and new riders of all abilities are always welcome.

State Baseball Tournament recap

Section 8AA champs, Park Rapids, maintained their No. 5 State Ranking by finishing as the Consolation Champs at the State Class AA Baseball Tournament, held in St. Cloud last week.

Park Rapids lost to Glencoe-Silver Lake in the first round, 7-1. They bounced back to beat Kenyon-Wanamingo in the consolation semifinals, 11-0 in five innings, then went on to defeat Triton for fifth place, 5-4.

St. Cloud Cathedral won their sixth State Championship, beating Glencoe-Silver Lake in the finals, 7-6. Cathedral also won several State private school titles before joining the Minnesota State High School League in the early 1970's.

The Section 6A winners, Sebeka, had the misfortune of taking on the defending State Champion in the first round, Sleepy Eye-St. Mary's, and lost 8-0. They were then knocked out of the tournament in the consolation semifinals by Maranatha Christian Academy, 7-6.

Sleepy Eye-St. Mary's went on to win their second consecutive State title, beating Royalton in the championship game, 7-4.

Cretin-Durham Hall beat Eden Prairie, 4-3, for the Class AAA State Championship.

PHS Cross Country Camp

The Yellowjacket Cross Country Camp will take place July 16-20 at Itasca State Park.

Training sessions will include instruction and understanding of areas such as hill training, fartleks, racing tactics, core strength, general training principals and diet and equipment.

Campers will do more than just run. Other activities will include swimming, paintball, low ropes challenge, guest speakers, including former PHS runners, and camp games.

Cost of the camp is $150. That includes camping fee, t-shirt, and meals for the week. Pre-registration should be turned in by June 15. There will be a pre-camp meeting on July 10.

Perham Summer Jam Basketball Camp July 16-19

The Perham Summer Jam Basketball Camp will take place July 16-19 at Prairie Wind Gymnasium.

The camp, run by Perham basketball coaches Dave Cresap and Brian Schwantz, will be open to boys and girls in grades 1-8 (based on the current school year).

Campers will learn the game of basketball through fundamental instruction, contests and daily games.

Cost of the camp will be $25, which includes a t-shirt and awards. Kids can sign-up on the first day of camp.
