Former Garrison, N.D., resident Valeria "Val" Hummel, 95, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, September 10, 2006 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.
Valeria was born to Joseph and Florence (MacDonald) Saldin on May 25, 1911 in Coleharbor, N.D. The oldest of nine children, she grew up and received her education in Coleharbor, graduating from Coleharbor High School in 1930. She then worked as a clerk at the Indian Agency in Elbowoods, N.D. On July 9, 1935 she married Jake Hummel in Washburn, N.D. They made their home and raised their family in Garrison, N.D., where Jake worked as a bulk agent for Mobile Gas Company. Val worked part time as a retail clerk at the Garrison Bakery. She moved to Detroit Lakes in 2001.
Val was a big supporter of the Garrison community. She was also a lifelong fan and supporter of the Garrison Troopers and Garrison school activities.
Surviving Val are her three sons, Lynn (Beverly) Hummel of Detroit Lakes, Bruce (Phyllis) Hummel of Fargo and Rolf (Ramona) Walter of Fairmont, Minn.; one daughter, Marjo (Gerald) Stahling of St. Cloud; one daughter-in-law, Wanda Hummel, of Fargo; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one sister, Josephine Martinson of Bismarck, N.D.; and one brother, Ted Saldin of Pullman, Wash.
Her parents; husband Jake (1980); son Gary Hummel; grandson Scott Hummel; sister, Jeanette Watkins; and five brothers, Dick, Bob, Don, John and Jim Saldin preceded her in death.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, with Chaplain Vicki Marthaler officiating; visitation will take place for one hour prior to the start of services.
Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, in Garrison Cemetery, Garrison, N.D. Arrangements have been entrusted to West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes.
