Mass choir to perform free Sept. 30 in DL

If you have a yen to hear some really good choral music, featuring some of the most outstanding compositions of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, then you must check out the Mass Choir Concert at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Starting at 7 p.m., choral groups from Trinity and First Lutheran churches in Detroit Lakes will join voices with "The Directors," a Paynesville-based professional choir composed of 17 former choral directors, for a unique musical experience that will also involve some audience participation.

"We will have the audience join in and sing along with the choir on about five songs," said Trinity Lutheran choir director Mark Berg. So they can sing along easily, the songs will be hymns familiar to the audience, he added.

The rest of the program will include approximately four songs performed by the mass choir, and three or four songs performed separately by each of the three choirs.

Between 60-75 singers will participate in the choirs, making the concert a unique event that will feature arrangements from each choir as well as combined pieces.

Berg noted that while he would be directing the Trinity choir, the First Lutheran Church Choir would be directed by Paul Heisler, and "The Directors" would be led by Dave Stumo.

Berg said that the music performed at the concert would run the gamut from very old, classic choral pieces, to some very modern compositions.

One piece is so new "it hasn't even been copyrighted yet," Berg noted.

"There will be some new stuff, some old stuff, and some stuff the audience can sing along with," he summarized.

And what makes the event even more special, Berg said, is that there will be no admission charged.

"It's an evening of free music," he said.
