Veterans Day program Saturday at Oak Grove Cemetery

Each year, Americans set aside Nov. 11 to honor the veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Services, past and present, in peacetime and in war.

In Detroit Lakes, the local American Legion and VFW posts take turns hosting the program, according to Post 15 Legion Commander Bud Larson. This year is the Legion's turn.

The festivities will begin Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10:30 a.m. in Oak Grove Cemetery, where there will be a memorial for all deceased veterans.

For the remainder of the morning and afternoon, members of the Detroit Lakes American Legion will be visiting the four major nursing home facilities in Becker County -- Emmanuel Community, St. Mary's Nursing Center, Frazee Care Center and Sunnyside Care Center -- to honor the veterans who are residents there.

The day will conclude with an open house for all veterans and their families at John Bridges American Legion Post 15 in Detroit Lakes, from 5-7 p.m.
