'Live nativity' can be seen at Osage and DL churches
The birth of Christ is coming to life this season.
Grace Community Church of Osage is performing a live nativity scene Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. outside the church.
Faith Lutheran Church and Faith Christian School, Detroit Lakes, is also performing a live nativity Dec. 19-20 from 6 to 8 p.m. To get there from Detroit Lakes, go south on Highway 59 for 11 miles, then right on County Road 31. It's the second house on the right.
Grace Community Pastor Bill Ullom said the church decided to perform its live nativity this year for the first time for three reasons.
"We're the only church in the community of Osage, so we wanted to emphasize Christmas for the community," he said.
Secondly, he said, a lot of the time it's "not popular to claim Christianity" so the church and nativity actors are ready to claim theirs.
And lastly, a breakfast club held at the church requested it.
The actors, complete with baby Jesus ("the mother's brave," he joked) will be outside in the scene and will act out the birth of Christ at 5, 6 and 7 p.m.
During and after the performances, there will be hot beverages, cookies and "a gift for everyone who comes" in the church.
Ullom said the performance and goodies are open to the public.
"Come celebrate Christmas with us," he said.
He said the church plans to continue the live nativity performance each year.
"It's a time to reflect on what Christmas is really all about before we get wrapped up in last minute shopping and travel."
