DL Schools operation director takes job with City of DL

Though the Detroit Lakes School Board had much to celebrate at Monday night's regular board meeting, that celebration was slightly bittersweet.

On the heels of learning that the district was being honored with a School Finance Award from the Minnesota Department of Education, the board was also asked to accept a resignation.

After more than 16 years with the Detroit Lakes School District, operations supervisor and transportation director Brad Green has opted to take on a new challenge, as public works director for the City of Detroit Lakes.

Though his resignation won't become official until March 13, Green's last day of work at the school's Administration Center was today (Wednesday).

"He's done such an outstanding job for us," said Board Chairman Dr. Tom Seaworth. "We really appreciate all you've done."

"I'm looking forward to it," Green said in a Tuesday interview. Though he will miss the camaraderie and the daily interaction with staff and students, Green said he is excited by the opportunity to take on new challenges.

"This job (as public works director) really fits my education, training and work experience," Green said, adding that he would be in charge of not only maintaining city streets, but also its parks and public facilities including the DL Pavilion and local ice arenas. "It just seemed like a good fit for me."

Green's duties with the city will begin Feb. 20. The school district has already begun to seek applications for his replacement.

There will be a farewell open house for Green this afternoon (Wednesday) from 3-5 p.m. at the School Administration Center.

In other business Monday, the board authorized seeking bids for two upcoming projects, the replacement of rooftop air handling units at the Detroit Lakes Middle School, and the replacement of the concession stand and bathrooms at Mollberg Field.

Business Manager Ted Heisserer noted that the air handling units at the middle school needed imminent replacement; some of them "have already begun to fail," he added.

Acting Superintendent Lowell Niklaus noted that the process of drawing up a list of cost containments for the 2007-08 school year has begun.

"Hopefully within the next couple of weeks we'll start narrowing down the list," he said, adding that he hopes to have a tentative list of recommendations for the board to review at the March 12 meeting, with final approval expected in April.

The actual amount of money that will need to be trimmed from next year's budget, Niklaus said, will depend on the "big three" factors -- legislative funding, staff salary negotiations and projected enrollment numbers.

The board also discussed the fact that Roosevelt Elementary School had been named as a 2006 recipient of the School Spotlight Award from the Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation (MAEF). Roosevelt School Principal Jerry Hanson will be officially presented with its award at a ceremony this Friday, Feb. 16, at the school.

The award presentation ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
