Menards to open in Detroit Lakes Tuesday

Let the building begin.

Detroit Lakes' Menards is opening Tuesday for business.

Residents have been awaiting the arrival of the home improvement store since the start of 2005, when Menards outbid Home Depot for the land near Wal-Mart for $1.3 million.

The Detroit Lakes Development Authority had the public utilities 98 acres of land appraised at $476,000. Menards bought just 56.6 acres of that because the rest was deemed unbuildable since it was wetlands.

With the acreage where Menards now sits, the company also bought the surrounding property, making a plan to sell off 11 lots to other businesses.

Earlier plans stated the 230,000-square-foot store and lumberyard will employ 110-120 people.

The home improvement store not only carries building materials, but also appliances, pet supplies, lawn and garden supplies and seasonal items.

With headquarters in Eau Claire, Wis., the family-owned company operates 200 stores throughout the Midwest. Other Menards stores in the region are located in Alexandria, West Fargo and Baxter.
