Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year

Monday morning students and staff at Lake Park-Audubon Elementary School gathered for a brief assembly. That assembly was to honor sixth-grade teacher Travis Nagel.

Representatives from Wal-Mart honored Nagel with Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year award.

"It was a surprise to me," he said. "I didn't know anything about it."

Although it was Wal-Mart giving Nagel a plaque, gift card and $1,000 for the school, it was the students who voted Nagel as No. 1.

"When the kids came in (to Wal-Mart) with their parents, there's a spot where they nominated their favorite teachers," Nagel said.

After a period of time, the ballots were counted, and Nagel came out on top.

He said he will have a say in what the $1,000 donation from Wal-Mart will go toward, but he said it will be something in the academic area.

This is Nagel's second year at Lake Park-Audubon, and he said it's a neat opportunity to be named because usually it's more seasoned teachers with Teacher of the Year distinctions.

"It's nice my kids thought enough of me to nominate me."
