Looking for junior pet supporters

The Humane Society of the Lakes is adding a younger crowd to the shelter with a Junior Humane Society.

Kids ages 8-16, and parents, are encouraged to attend the first ever meeting Tuesday and become a part of the organization.

"It's basically to have them learn about activities," said Shelter Director Erica Borsheim.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., youth are welcome at the puppy and kitty social, where they can tour the shelter and check out the residents.

The meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m., where kids and parents can learn how to help at the humane society.

Borsheim said she hopes to have the kids involved with upcoming parades, help out in the Mutt Strut and just helping out at the shelter.

After establishing this first meeting, youth and parents will meet once a month to plan and be involved.

"It's for both parents and kids," Borsheim said, "to help learn and take part in helping and volunteering and getting involved."

The Humane Society of the Lakes shelter is located along Highway 59 North.
