MN marriage database available online soon

Very soon, there may be a statewide, centralized index of marriage records that can be accessed from any county in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Association of County Officers is proposing the creation of an Official Marriage Database -- and Becker County has committed $2,000 toward the project.

The Becker County Board of Commissioners approved the request from County Recorder Darlene Maneval to withdraw the money from the Recorders Technology Fund as the county's share of the project.

The county's total commitment toward the MACO initiative includes $1,000 for the initial set-up fee and $500 for maintenance in the each of the first and second years of the project.

According to the proposal, the initial set-up fee is a one-time cost, and maintenance fees beyond the first two years of the project are not expected to exceed $500 (50 percent of the initial fee).

The county's participation is voluntary; however, any marriage data entered into the official database will remain there even in the event that the county withdraws from future involvement in the project, as per the terms of the county's statement of commitment toward the project, signed by Maneval on Nov. 27.

In other business Tuesday, the board:

n Approved a grant contract with the State of Minnesota for operation of Becker County's Household Hazardous Waste Management Program.

The state will pay a maximum of $15,875 -- to be matched by $3,970 in county funds -- for Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness planning and training.

Heard a report from Human Services Director Nancy Nelson that the collaboration of Becker County, the Becker County Children's Initiative, Minnesota CEP, and the Minnesota Consortium for Advanced Rural Psychology Training had been successful in obtaining a $120,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to develop a pilot project.

The purpose of the 18-month pilot project would be to develop a means of early identification of children's mental health illnesses for families participating in the Minnesota Family Investment Program.

According to Nelson, Becker County was the only county in the state to receive a grant for such a project this year.
