Ag Matters - Dairy Days set for Jan. 9 in McIntosh

The University of Minnesota Extension Service-Polk County will offer their annual Dairy Days program on Jan. 9.

Minnesota Dairy Days are an opportunity for producers and advisors to hear the latest research-based information from University scientists and educators.

The program will be at the McIntosh Community Center and will begin at 10 a.m., with registration and coffee at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $15 per person.

This year, we will offer two presentations. The morning session will focus on milk quality while the afternoon program will emphasize feeds.

Dr. Jeff Reneau, U of M Department of Animal Science, will present the morning session which will offer tips on how to consistently produce high quality, low SCC milk. Dr. Reneau will also offer information on what's new and how to effectively apply the latest proven quality milk production practices on your farm. This informative and practical workshop will be more meaningful for you if you bring your latest DHI SCC herd summary report and the most recent 20-30 bulk tank pickup SCC test results. Be prepared to have a good discussion and plan on learning something to improve your herd's SCC.

The afternoon session will be provided by Jim Paulson, Dairy Nutritionist with the University of Minnesota. His talk, "The Big 10: Feeding Dairy Cows in 2008," will be an interactive discussion on items like feed costs, forage quality effects on ration costs, alternative feeds, and strategies as well as sharing ideas that work on your farm. Bring along your forage samples, forage tests and rations, and be part of the discussion.

A noon lunch will be provided by the world famous chef, Elmyrna Kaupang. You won't want to miss the meal or the presentations.
