Fly Girls headed to state dance -- Frazee-Vergas Schools will run past Memorial Day weekend in 2009

Next school year, Frazee-Vergas Schools will run past the Memorial weekend in 2009.

"The way next year works out, we will go past Memorial weekend, and because of state law, we can't start school before Labor Day," School Board member Dwight Cook said.

During the 2008-09 school year, there will be a two-week period off over Christmas for "winter break." Both Christmas and New Year's fall on a Thursday this year.

But that's not the only time students will have off. The board also passed, for this month, two days off for the Fly Girls danceline team to head to state and for the wrestling team, contingent on it making it to state.

Board member LaRaye Anderson said she had received several phone calls from parents who are concerned about the difficulty of finding daycare for elementary students on those days.

"If most of the staff and students went down, I'd say yes, but I've been there (down to state) and it's a handful of staff," she said.

With only a small portion of the school community taking part in the state trip, she said maybe the board should look into whether or not school should be closed on those days in the future.

With school being closed for several years when the boys made it to state, it's only fair school closes for the girls now, Anderson said.

The board would be doing a "grave disservice" to the Fly Girls, Anderson said, if it didn't give a day off for them to go to state, since a precedent has already been set for the wrestlers.

The Frazee Fly Girls Jazz Team placed second at the Section 4A Dance Team Tournament at Hawley last Saturday, earning them a spot at the state level.

Frazee, Pequot Lakes, who placed first, and Pelican Rapids, who placed third, advanced to the state tournament, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 15.

Last year the Frazee Fly Girls competed for the first time and were honored with a trip to the state competition after placing third in the section tournament.

"Our goal last year was just to get to state. That was it. Our goal this year is to make it in the top six at state," Coach Ta Fett said.

"This is an example of outstanding leadership" from staff and students," Stender said.
