Man sentenced to prison for vehicular homicide

Andrew James Medved, 20, of 210 Park St. S. No. 1, Park Rapids, was sentenced Friday in Becker County District Court to 58 months in prison for criminal vehicular homicide.

An identical charge was dropped in a plea agreement.

In the early morning hours of April 29 Medved was the driver of a vehicle that crashed into a tree on Highway 34 in eastern Becker County, killing a passenger -- Grant Harmon Harvala, according to court records.

Harvala died at the scene after the eastbound vehicle went into the south ditch and hit a tree, ejecting him from the backseat.

Medved was pinned inside the vehicle and after being rescued was taken to a hospital in Fargo, where his blood alcohol level tested at .18 percent, more than twice the legal limit. In the hospital, he told authorities that he was too drunk to know whether he had been the driver of the vehicle, according to court records.

Another passenger, Timothy Maher, was riding in the front seat and told investigators that Medved was driving at the time of the accident, according to court records.

On Friday, District Judge Mark Hansen sentenced Medved to 58 months in prison and ordered him to pay $8,946 in restitution and a $50 fine from his prison earnings. He was remanded to prison immediately.
