Two DL Middle School students chosen for honor band
Detroit Lakes Middle School band students Derick Brehm and Katie Anderson have been selected to perform with the 2008 Middle Level All-State Honor Band.
Brehm, an eighth grader who plays the euphonium, is one of three players, and Anderson, a seventh grade bassoonist, is one of two players selected from all Minnesota middle school band programs to perform on their instrument with the ensemble.
The band, which includes 78 elite members total, was chosen from hundreds of auditioning students from grades 6-8 statewide.
To earn membership into the Minnesota All-State Honor Band, auditioning students and their director are required to prepare an audition tape that includes several scales in various key signatures and articulations, a chromatic scale demonstrating the full range of capability, and two etudes of contrasting style. All students auditioning are required to perform the same literature.
The two DLMS students will rehearse and perform with the group on April 19-20 at Northfield Middle School as part of the Minnesota Music Educator's extended convention.
The event is sponsored by the Minnesota Band Director's Association. The mission of MBDA is to foster student and teacher development, and support band programs throughout Minnesota.
The State Honor Band is in its 12th year. With Brehm and Anderson's participation, DLMS bands have sent a total of 24 students to take part in the event since its inception.
