Figure skating clubs perform movie-themed ice shows

DETROIT LAKES - Who can resist the likes of Robin Hood, some ghosts, Tom Cruise and Kevin Bacon? On ice?

Saturday, March 8, at 7 p.m., the DL Blades Figure Skating Club is performing "A Night at the Movies" in the Kent Freeman Sports Arena. It is a free-will offering, and there will be a raffle drawing.

Also performing the movie theme is Lakes Figure Skating Club, which will present "Movie Classics on Ice" Sunday, March 9, at 2:30 p.m. in the arena. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students.

"At the conclusion of last year's show, we talked about doing a movie theme for this year's show," DL Blades Coach Jennifer Berg said. "After searching the Internet for the Top 100 movies of all time, we came up with our songs and theme."

Using movies the group thought easily recognizable, it has chosen songs from "Robin Hood," "The Fox and the Hound," "Ghost Busters," The Matrix," "Top Gun" and "Footloose" to name a few.

Berg added that the songs were chosen as "age-appropriate for skaters at all levels."

Practicing for about six weeks, the show includes more than 40 skaters ranging in age from 5 to 26.

"The hardest part is attendance," Berg said. "We always have to worry about illness this time of the year and working around all the schedules of other events at the arena."

Lakes Figure Skating Club felt the movie theme would be a fun one as well.

"We picked songs that seemed fun to skate to," Board Member Deb Erickson said.

Some of the movies and songs include "The Piano," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Godfather," "Forest Gump," "Singin' in the Rain," "Flashdance" and "Ratatouille" to name a few.

Besides the movie numbers, skaters will also perform competition numbers, and there will be a dance number. There are about 25-40 skaters from ages 3 to early 20s involved with Lakes Figure Skating Club.

Guest skater Maggie Garberg from the Red River Valley Figure Skating Club in Fargo will also be performing at the Sunday performance.

A couple of this year's DL Blades show highlights include Level 1 skaters featured as the characters from "Shrek," a special appearance by the Chipmunks, and "our lightshow is one of our best ones yet," Berg said. "We will also feature a special opening number and a number with the coaches and the advance skaters."

Co-directors of the show are Sue Berg and Kathy Johnson.

"This year's show will feature a lot of technical footwork, incorporating dance skills along with the skating skills. The skaters will also be using theatrical skills, using facial expressions and acting out parts of the movies," Berg said.

Erickson said this is the 40th year for Lakes Figure Skating Club, and lessons will begin again next October.

"They pretty much melt the ice the weekend after our show," she said.
