Man sentenced after firing gun to scare hogs home

Michael Lynn Taylor, 53, of 11818 County Road 39, Frazee was sentenced in Becker County District Court for possession of firearms by a convicted felon.

On April 21, deputies responded to his residence on a report of his hogs being loose in a neighbor's field. He had fired a 12-gauge shotgun in the air to scare them home, according to court records.

He is barred from possessing firearms in Minnesota because of an assault and battery conviction in Louisiana in 1992. He voluntarily turned in two shotguns and a Ruger .22 caliber to Becker County authorities.

On Friday, District Judge Michael Kirk sentenced him to 33 months in prison, execution of sentence stayed 15 years. He was placed on supervised probation and ordered to serve nine months in jail and pay a $2,00 fine plus court fees. He may apply $1,000 in bail towards the fine and work off the rest through the STS program.
