Economic summit proves successful

There is something very exciting going on in the Detroit Lakes. People are extremely interested in being a part of what happens in the future of this town and area.

Dave Hochhalter, president of the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce stated, "The Regional Economic Development Summit held on March 7 in DL was a tremendous success with nearly 100 people in attendance. It was an opportunity to celebrate our successes and look at ways we can work together on tomorrow's solutions for our Region. Many exciting ideas were shared."

A few of these include:

-- To develop a professional park for high tech businesses plus, professional and government offices, etc., offering an area that caters to these white collars opportunities here in town.

n To develop a "master plan" for the South Washington and West Lake Drive areas to include development of mixed use plan for these areas. Develop a unique waterfront area.

-- To create an economic development Web site which shares all corresponding resources and tools with links to the city, county, chamber, schools, MMCDC, real estate, etc.

-- Print a community profile publication with economic development, community development, schools, medical, quality of life, etc., promoting the opportunities for community and the region.

-- Ideas on ways to preserve our environment like offering expanded recycling alternatives.

"These ideas offered at the summit will be shared and taken into consideration. It's important that we listen to the people who care about and are a part of this community's future," says Bruce Langness, Economic Development chairman.

"We want to open up that opportunity at these Summit meetings," Hochhalter added. "There is a combined effort between the City of Detroit Lakes, Becker County, the Chamber, economic development organizations, the schools in the area and Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corporation to insure that the future of Detroit Lakes is very bright."

The Chamber's Economic Development Committee is planning a series of mini summits. The next one will be held on May 22 in Ulteig Engineers, Detroit Lakes. For more information, call 218-847-9202.
