Stabbing victim's condition upgraded, charges filed in case

A White Earth stabbing victim's condition was upgraded to "guarded" on Wednesday, according to a spokesman for Meritcare Hospital in Fargo.

Edward Dakota, 22, was transported to St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes with a severe chest wound, then transferred to Meritcare.

Guarded condition is two steps below critical condition, according to the spokesman. "There's critical, serious, guarded, satisfactory...," she said.

His brother, Daniel Dakota, 24, was also injured in the assault. He was also transported to St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes, where he was treated for head lacerations, and released.

A suspect has been charged in the case. Nakoya Lee VanWert, 18, of White Earth was arrested without incident after officers found him hiding in the woods a short distance from the White Earth home where the incident occurred, about 5:40 a.m.

VanWert's birthday was Sunday.

Alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the assaults, and there were at least 12 people at the scene, according to the Becker County Sheriff's Department.

VanWert appeared in Becker County District Court before Judge Peter Irvine, who set bail at $100,000.

VanWert has been charged with first- degree assault - great bodily harm, and two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, all felonies.

His next court appearance is May 5.
