Spring burning restrictions now in effect in Becker, Otter Tail

Much of northwestern and west-central Minnesota are now under spring open burning permit restrictions, starting at 8 a.m. today.

The restrictions took effect today in Becker, Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Crow Wing, eastern Polk, Otter Tail, Aitkin, and Wadena counties.

Restrictions went into effect last Friday for Kittson, Roseau, Marshall, Pennington and northwest Beltrami counties in northwestern Minnesota. Lake of the Woods County started restricting permits on Monday.

DNR fire protection manager Olin Phillips says most spring wildfires start from the burning of yard debris. Phillips says the agency is asking residents to use other methods to dispose of debris, such as recycling, composting or chipping.

The restrictions are going into effect later than in recent years, because of normal winter snowfall and cool spring weather.
