Pool Safety Act passes in honor of 6-year-old

The Minnesota House of Representatives has unanimously passed the "Abigail Taylor Pool Safety Act" sponsored by Rep. Paul Thissen.

The bill strengthens and broadens Minnesota's pool safety regulations to make sure all public pools in the state are designed to avoid serious injuries and death.

"Minnesota families will soon be heading out to the pool with their children for the summer -- a time to relax and create great memories," said Thissen. "This is common sense legislation that allows parents to watch their children swim and play without worrying whether the pool is safe and properly maintained.'"

The bill is named in honor of Abigail Taylor, who was seriously injured last summer when playing in a wading pool. Abigail died as a result of her injuries this spring.

"Sometimes we fail to act until a tragedy occurs and wakes us up," said Thissen. "This legislation is a testament to the family of Abigail Taylor, who have worked tirelessly to make sure other families do not have to go through what the Taylors experienced."
