Nail tech services benefit hospice

When Barb Nelson wanted to raise money to donate to Hospice of the Red River Valley, she decided to stick with what she knew.

Nelson, a nail technician at In Kahoots for Hair and Nails salon in Detroit Lakes, is offering a free set of acrylic nails with a $20 donation to Hospice for the first 25 callers.

After all is said and done, Nelson will have raised $500 to donate to Hospice's new Gifts of Light giving pro-gram.

Nelson, who recently started volunteering with Hospice, heard of the new giving program and thought this would be a good way to raise money.

"One of the owners had mentioned a while ago about possibly running a special," Nelson said, "so when this came up, I thought it would be a nice thing to do."

Typically, a full set of nails costs $45, so "it's still a heck of a deal," Nelson said.

All donations given through the Gifts of Light program will be matched by the Otto Bremer Foundation, which recently awarded Hospice Red River Valley with a challenge grant of $50,000.

The Foundation will match donations until June 15. The lowest level that can be matched is $500, which Nelson hopes to reach.

If she raises the $500, it will mean $1,000 for Hospice, said Joy Crouch, development officer for Hospice Red River Valley.

Crouch said she had talked with other colleagues about different projects and fund-raisers to recommend, but hadn't thought of doing nails.

"Isn't that just the most amazing thing?" Crouch asked. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think of doing this. It's so exciting."

Crouch said the new giving program is something Hospice has been trying to get the word out about.

"Funding for Hospice is always something we have to pursue," she said. "Many of our patients come in with Medicare or Medicaid and their services come to them free, but our costs continue to skyrocket. We are always working diligently to raise those funds."

She added that many people don't realize how large Hospice is, or how many people it serves: around 300 a year, and 50 each day.

Nelson said it's a good way to give back to the community and help people. If it goes well, she said she might run another similar special.
