Bevins wins big to be re-elected to tribal council

Kenneth "Gus" Bevins has won re-election to the White Earth Tribal Council Tuesday, defeating Ralph "Bucky" Goodman of Pine Point by 557 votes to 291 votes, or 66 percent to 34 percent.

The District III committeeman race was the only contest on the general election ballot, since Tribal Chairwoman Erma Vizenor was re-elected by a majority of primary voters.

Bevins and Goodman, a former tribal council member, were the top two vote-getters in that primary, but neither won a majority, so a general election was required.

On Tuesday, Bevins dominated in his home precinct of White Earth village, winning 204 votes to 70 votes.

Goodman won his home precinct of Pine Point, 76 votes to 67 votes.

And he carried the Minneapolis precinct 28 to 11.

Bevins carried Callaway 43 votes to 19 and carried Ogema 39 to 5.

He won 17 to 5 in Elbow Lake and 20 to 16 in Cass Lake.

Bevins received 156 absentee ballots to 72 for Goodman.
